When is the correct time to contact rowing coaches? I am female, 5'6'' and go back and forth between heavyweight and lightweight. My 2k is 7:59, but I have been rowing for less than a year and it is definitely on its way down (I play/played other sports). I am currently a junior, but am taking the SAT in May. I have some AP and SATII scores, but is it worth it to contact coaches without SAT scores (although I am expecting them to be high, ie 2300+) and a relatively unimpressive 2k? Should I wait until May when I will have an SAT score and a lower 2k? I also plan on attending one or two rowing camps over the summer (probably Sparks and maybe another college camp).

Thanks so much!

What division are you looking at?

The rowing coaches will care much more about your splits going down than your SAT going up. I think it will need to come way down before you start contacting coaches - particularly at 5’6" and borderline heavyweight. Rowing can be a good walk-on or low experienced sport for tall women with college admissions, but 5’6" is borderline. Have you spoken with your coach? Are you still rowing novice? How do you think you will stack up at your club amongst the experienced rowers next fall? If you will make it into a varsity boat and go to HOC you will likely meet coaches there and it will be a resume item. Are you in a spring boat/club that is likely to win at regionals?

^^ ps different for a true lightweight, but then collegiate options are limited as well - if your aiming for HYPS etc. erg scores/racing experience/height would still come ahead of SAT
