When to explain bad grades?

I had straight A's but when I moved my fashion grade dropped to a D and Bio dropped to a B-. I moved schools when the semester was almost over and those two classes are very project based, bringing my grade down a lot.

However, I retook fashion and got an A, and I had already taken Bio the year before and received A's.

Should I still explain the bad grades in the additional info portion of the application? Will colleges understand?

This would be a good thing to discuss with your guidance counselor. It may be best for your counselor to write about it rather than you.

Thanks for the advice, however, my counselor just keeps saying ‘‘personal statement’’ and doesn’t understand I’d rather use that to let my personality come through. I just don’t know whether or not to explain it since I retook the classes, and how understanding colleges will be.

It’s really his job to do that explanation, but he may not want to. Some of them are overwhelmed with the number of statements they have to write and/or some are just lazy and not that good.

If he’s not going to do it, you’ll have to, but transferring mid-semester is a perfectly logical explanation, especially if it’s a blip in an otherwise stellar record.
