Hi -

My D is a rising junior and I was wondering when is the best time to first take ACT? I know the PSATs are in Oct but I am not as familiar with ACT...thanks in advance.

The way ACT works, your D can take it any time and not have to send the score (unless she is applying to some of the extremely selective schools that do not use score choice)…you only send ACT by date taken…

That being said, some kids take it without prep and realize they need to prep for it; others would rather wait, prep and then try it…all depends…

there are upper level math questions that include trig and pre-calc…some wait until later due to that…

For the most part, the juniors I speak with will take their first ACT in the fall or in February with the assumption they will take again in April/June…but they are not in the VERY selective school camp so they can choose which date to send to colleges…

and fwiw, it looks like many more schools are starting to superscore the ACT (while in the past it was very few)…

I’m taking it for the first time in September.

The ACT did a survey on this: [ACT : Quick Poll Results](<a href=“The ACT Test for Students | ACT”>The ACT Test for Students | ACT)

I took my first one october of my junior year. Then I took a prep class and did it again in June…and I plan on taking it again in september. With that said, you may just want to time it so that your D can take it 2-3 times at least.

People who seem to do well on ACT seem to do so in April or June of their junior year (I usually see people getting perfect scores in those tests).

You should do practice tests to figure out the ball park. Some schools do require you to provide all attempts if you are aiming for Ivies.
