I just finished my first semester in college, and I remember all the headache of getting recommendations together during my senior year of high school. I was wondering if colleges have some type of file that we can request professors to write a recommendation for. I know that by senior year, some of my professors might not remember me as well, and therefore is it advisable to ask for recommendations now? I'm not really sure how this works. Thanks and happy new year!

Yes, it is DEFINITELY advisable to get recommendations now. Like you stated, your professors will usually not remember you down the line, especially if you don't take another one of their classes. Most colleges should have a recommendation file- you should talk to your counselor.
