when to guess???

ok so both an online course i took and my review book have told me that it is stupid not to guess if you can eliminate 1 of the 5 answer choices, and i understand the logic behind it, you are essentially getting credit for being able to eliminate one answer choice. however, last weekend i went to a tutor who told me you should never guess unless you have eliminate 3 of the 5 answer choices, arguing that its important to answer fewer questions but get more correct. which of these methods sound better? i am taking the SAT this Saturday and need help!!!

Okay, guessing after eliminating only one might be a little bit risky. If u can eliminate two, then... I'd personally feel a little uneasy, but might be worth it to guess. If it's down to 50-50 chances, then definitely guess.

But from what I've experienced in the past, A LOT of questions on the SAT contain at least 2-3 answer choices that simply don't make any sense whatsoever. If u know what u r doing, then u should be able to easily eliminate at least 2 choices on most of the questions.

Also, a tip about guessing: once u make a decision and choose an answer choice, don't go back to it later and change ur answer. Changing answers on the SAT is usually a really bad idea. Be confident, pick an answer, and move on with the test.

Eliminate THREE. It all depends on the question. Sometime you eliminate 2 but your gut tells you to guess because you THINK you can eliminate one other but you're not sure. Try to eliminate three unless you're not trying to get over a 2000.

thanks, id ideally like to break 2000, another thing the tutor told me was to divide the total raw score by your goal raw score to see what % of problems you need to get right, but she kind of assumed you would get 100% of these problems right so it doesn't sound like the best idea...

I would definitely guess if I could eliminate at least TWO answers. The majority of questions make it pretty easy to whittle it down to two or three choices so...

Statistically, you should guess even if you can only eliminate one answer choice. However, I understand why this may seem excessive. If you are not willing to do this, however, my advice would be to always guess if you can eliminate at least two answers.

Personally, I always answer every question...even when I took the SAT as a middle schooler, in those talent-search thingies, I answered every question. But I might not be a good example, since I am a natural test taker.

My formula is never leave any blank. Go with your guts even if you have no idea.
