When to move in to the dorms?

What's the "normal" time for people to pack their crap and move into the dorms freshman year? A week before class starts? At Orientation (which is like 4 days before class)? What?

Also, will the college typically give you some contact info for who you're roomed with when they tell you your room assignment? Or does it get to be a surprise when I move in?

Clue me in here.

Typically most schools have a day when the Residence Halls open and that’s labeled as “Freshman Move-In Day”. That’s when most move into the dorms at their school. That’s usally 5-7 days before classes start.

My school gave us no contact info. We had to use their messaging system and HOPED our roommate would respond with a form of contact (email, facebook, name, etc). It became a problem. Some people had no idea until the day they moved in. That’s not the norm. Most schools at least give a name and an email or phone number.

Mine was… 4 days before classes started. Labled as a freshman move in day.

At my school, they give you a move-in date. And at UC Davis, orientation is not 4 days before classes, but rather from late June to early August. They usually also give you contact info of your new roommate.
