When to request an extension?

The deadline for S's second choice school is approaching fast while the first choice school hasn't yet come out with a scholarship offer. ( That is true for most admitted students at this school not just him.) My first question is, is it actually required to withdraw from every other school that accepted you when you accept a seat at one lawschool?

From what I understand the best thing to do is request an extesion from the the school with the deadline. Would a week before the deadline be too early to make this request?

BTW, I know that there is no need to withdraw from waitlists or from schools that have not offered a decision on admission. This question is regarding a school that has accepted the student but hasn't rendered scholarship decisions.

I have seen conflicting comments about this on other sites and I couldn't figure out what to Google so I thought I would just ask here.

Thanks!

Have your son read the terms of acceptance. If they require him to withdraw from other schools then he will have to make a decision. If not, no problem. You can request an extension whenever you want. I doubt admissions will care whether it’s a week or two weeks or two days prior to the deadline.

Your son is going to be a lawyer, right? Have him read the terms of the acceptances.

For many schools, you only lose your seat deposit if you do not enroll. But have him read the terms for both schools in question.

Thanks both of you, I’m sure he will figure it out. I thought there was a general policy that was consistent for all schools. I’m just jittery waiting to hear the final decision on the other side of the country. Thank you for clarifying that the policy varies depending on the school. I can’t wait till the decision is made!
