A student wants to change a major after submitting her/his application for admission. Some essays are about the major such as why choosing this major etc. Should the student request to change the major before receiving an acceptance letter or after it? Thank you for your answer.
Very school dependent. Some schools do not require you to declare a major until end of Sophomore year of college. Many do not admit by major.
Some schools will not allow a change of major until you are accepted and attend orientation and some will have a deadline after the application has been submitted where you can change your major.
I have not seen one could skip a selection of a major while was applying for admission. So, what should the applicant do, notify a school of change of a majoy before receive an acceptance letter or after it? Does anyone know it or provide your suggestion?
All applications require a major selection but the schools that either do not admit by major or do not require you to declare a major until your Sophomore year, the major selection is more informational.
If there is no deadline to change your major after you have applied, then you can contact that school to see if a major change is possible before the acceptance.
After the acceptance, you would still need to contact the school(s) about wanting to change your major and it is up to that particular school if you can change it then or have to wait until you matriculate. Many schools will require you to take specific pre-req courses and maintain a specific GPA before changing your major.
As is in my first post, it is school dependent. Can you name the school(s)?
I am in California, and our state schools are very competitive. I think every school required my daughter to pick a major, because most majors are impacted. Therefore, schools know that kids will select a less desirable major just to get in and then switch later. So some schools here only let you switch a major within a school. For example, if you were admitted into the school of business, you could switch majors within that school. It would be extremely hard to switch into engineering. Some schools have clear policies on this so look it up. If you can’t find your answer online than call the school. I doubt you could switch a major before accepting. If they made you pick a major then most likely they select their students based on the major they picked. The schools know how many spaces they have for each major.
