When to send SAT scores?

My ds should be named a semi-finalist in September (225+) score. He already has what would be a "qualifying" SAT score. Should we send it now or wait until semis are named?

I always wonder/worry about sending scores before apps anywhere. I've had one university tell me to send the app first, then the scores because if there is no app there is nothing to tie the scores to. I realize this is a different animal from the college application process, however.

Advice? Thanks in advance!

My D sent them her scores for June '12 test as one of her 4 free sends since she knew she had a good shot at NMSF last year. By that time they had the commended kids separated out and keeping track of them. Anyway, they received and tagged it fine, never had to send another.

^Good point. I hadn’t considered that the process has really begun with the initial naming of qualifiers. Thanks!

I have the same question, but mine is regarding the SAT’s. I will be a junior this year but have already taken my SAT’s and got a 1940. I already know I am looking at a few engineering schools and Rutgers. Is it too early to send my SAT’s to my colleges I am considering just to get my name in the system, or since I want to get my math score up I should wait till that score goes up.

You might want to post this questions somewhere else, so it doesn’t get buried.

I have “heard” that, at least at some schools, it’s better to have the application go in first because, otherwise, they don’t have anything to “connect” you with. However, I don’t how that works with free score reports. Since you plan to take it again, I would contact the schools you know you are interested in and find out their preference, how they handle free score reports coming in before applications, etc.

I would just wait until you’re officially named. Not worth the risk imo

I don’t think there is any risk if you know you can get a score above the verification requirement. The deadline is December of Senior year. Schools would keep your scores in file even if you don’t submit the application in the end. In the worse scenario, you just need to resend the scores which would be the same as not submitting the free score. You can easily find out what is missing in your application.

My d took the SAT in Oct of Junior year, and the PSAT the following week. She sent her SAT scores without seeing them using the free score report. We figured if it wasn’t high enough or she didn’t make NMSF, it wouldn’t matter. Since her PSAT score was high enough, she was good and it was done. There was no problem on their end.

Some schools even let you submit the January round of testing AFTER the apps go in, so I think you are fine.

^ The thread is about sending in SAT score for NMSF. For that, December of senior year is the last round.
