I'm Junior this year and will be Senior starting Sep 2013. When do people typically start applying for Scholarships to organizations outside of college? I believe you can only seek College Scholarship when you are admitted in college so that can't be done till you get accepted.

Talk to your GC as soon as school restarts in the fall. They can tell you what scholarships are normally available through the state/county/city/school. Be aware, though, that most of those scholarships will only help you in your freshman year. The majority of college scholarship funding comes from the college itself. Select your college application set well if you really need the $.

I’m wondering the same thing. My daughter will be a HS senior in the fall, and 98% of the scholarships that I’ve come across are open to HS seniors only. So from what I gather, the majority of scholarships will be open to you beginning in the fall, depending on the application deadline date. I haven’t seen any that are dependent on you being accepted, but again, I’m new to all of this and am not sure my perspective is accurate.

If your school is still open, ask for a list of scholarships this years seniors received. You can also check with nearby high schools. Check with your local newspaper to see if have written about scholarship winners. See which organizations are in your area; Elks, Rotary, VFW, etc. and see if they have scholarship competitions.

This is what I am doing. I am looking up all the scholarships I want to apply for and filling out most of the application early so that I can have less stress when I am a senior.

I signed up at this site, and it sends me an email every so often about possible scholarship opportunities. Again, most of them are for HS seniors.

[College Scholarships, Cappex Scholarships, Merit Aid Scholarships - Cappex](Find Scholarships for College Students: Scholarship Database | Cappex)

I second the recommendation of Cappex. As a result of an email received from Cappex, my nephew applied for (and won!) a $5,000 yearly scholarship from the Horatio Alger Association.

These private scholarships are nice if you get them, but keep in mind that they often only help for freshman year. There have been families that have calculated that certain schools are affordable based on the cost of freshman year based on those one-time-only scholarships. Then when that scholarship money goes away for sophomore year, the school isn’t affordable.

If you need merit scholarship money to afford college, then you need to apply to the SCHOOLS that give them for your stats. Those are usually for all four years.
