When To Start Applying

I am only an incoming freshman at UCI, but I would like to know when is the best time to start applying to med school.

I'm sure this has been answered before, but I'll ask anyways. I will be a biomedical engineering: pre-med major. I should have all math, gen chem, org chem, physics, and a year's worth of bio done by the end of sophomore year, including biochem.

So, I figure I should take the MCAT right after sophomore year. What I want to know is: what is the earliest time I should start the application process. I keep hearing "apply early", but not much more. What is early enough? Is that junior year?

Any and all help will be appreciated. I'm sure bdm can drop me a thread link or two.

lol When we say early, we're talking about months, not years. Most people apply the summer after their junior year. That's if you want to matriculate right after graduation from undergrad. Applying in the June or July of that summer could be seen as "early" while applying in September would be considered pretty "late."

heh yeah, i kinda figured it was after junior year, but I didn't rule out any farfetched ideas. I've only browsed these forums a bit the last few months, but I had never found a definitive answer. Thanks norcalguy.
