when to start

Hi guys, i m in 10th grade. Nearing its end. I took the SAT last october and got a 1460... thats terrible (Math 480, CR 470, Writing 510)... so I was wondering if i should really start prepping now. I have Barrons and Blue book laying here. Idk when to start really hardcore studying for it. Should i just focus on my grades now and study for SAT this summer? Or should i start now and keep on going.

Grades are more important for now. Focus on grades; don't worry about the SAT. It's not for over 2 years. 24 months. 720 days. Whatever 720x24 is hours. Yes, focus on your classes and getting good grades. If you pay attention in math class, that can help your understanding of math and that will help your math reasoning skills, which helps on the SAT. If you pay attention to good grammar when you write essays, you're practicing your writing skills, which are important to any high school graduate going to college. When you read the assigned books, you're boosting your reading skills. Doing well in high school helps give you the needed skills that are tested on the SAT.

If you wanted to get a head start, you don't need hardcore studying, and taking lots of practice tests won't help right now. If you want, read your daily local newspaper, or read the New York Times. Start reading magazines like Time and the New Yorker and National Geographic, which are all good for you. You don't need to do any SAT-specific things right now. You're only in 10th grade. Enjoy high school. Research some activities that you want to do in the summer-time. Find some volunteer opportunities. Get a job. This is what you should focus more on, not the SAT. Enjoy high school while you can :)

Thanks hehe I might be going to governer school this summer so yeah :D My grades are mostly As so that should be fine. Im gonna try to get higher As i guess.

I don't think you need to hardcore prep it, maybe just practice a couple sections every couple weeks instead of cramming. Presumably you'll be smarter next yr and your scores will rise.

Just take a month out of your summer and just devote it to SATs. Longer you draw it out over a long period of time when it comes to practicing, lower the scores could be. I was hoping that taking tough classes, like AP Lang, might boost my scores a bit, but really... nothing beats hardcore practice.

For me, I was worried about how going to Governor's School for an entire month was going to cut off major prep time, but it doesn't matter as long as you are planning to dedicate some serious time into it afterwards.

I was getting 500s to 600s in the beginning of the month, but after that one month of hard work, I got back over 2200 from the real tests. So good luck, and have fun in govschool.

dont worry about SATs YET over the summer. focus on your PSATs first. but lets repeat that...OVER THE SUMMER! you have 4 more months of childhood and freedom...you dont need to start preparing for your tests just yet. wait until your exams are done and you are out of school before you start studying for the PSATs (which come up in october). when you are studying for the PSATs, you are also studying for the SATs at the same time, since you have to apply the same strategies. but just remember: the only thing that the PSAT test matters for is for the NM scholarship. otherwise, colleges dont care what you get on your PSAT.

oh...and take the ACTs just in case you dont do well on the (P)SAT ;) and for the millionth time, it doesnt matter whether you send in your SAT or ACT score. colleges dont care at all.
