Okay so basically, I'm not getting much help on the whole Fin Aid thing. My mom doesn't seem to want to get involved and my guidance counselor didn't even know there was a fee waiver for college applications! Luckily, I have this place. So I really need to know as much as possible to be vague. Like, when? or how? or why? no wait, I know that one. This aspect of the college search I have found to be most confusing. I feel sort of lost in this world of scholarships and deadlines and essays and merity stuff. The extent of my search has been fastweb, but I know how to apply for those, but like what about certain school's scholarships? Man, I just feel so... overwhelmed here. Help before I get stuck in a lame state school (Unless you count having a good football team as a good school, then we've got a great school).

Most schools you apply to will automatically consider you for scholarships as long as you fill out FAFSA and, for some, CSS Profile. For some, however, you need to apply--found this out too late for one of my son's schools. (Fortunately he didn't end up going there.) For state schools, the earlier you apply for admission the better, as scholarships are given out early. (Found this out too late, too, and my son IS going to that one. Ouch!) The best way to find out is check out each college's website, and read carefully all application forms and info they send you.

Also, the best chance for winning merit scholarships is locally. You need to check the counselor's office often. Hopefully they will post local scholarships. Some high schools even list them online. Or do an online search using the words "scholarships" and your state or city. Read the local newspaper for announcements of scholarship offerings. And just generally keep eyes and ears open.

Good luck!
