When to submit application materials?

I'm applying to several Ph.D. programs in math and math-related areas. I have two questions:

1)When should I submit the GRE scores? Is it OK to submit GRE scores to a school, even though I haven't submitted the full application yet?

2)To maximize chances of getting accepted, is it ever wise to send materials in before I receieve my fall grades? I was once told that undergrad schools don't really care when the applicants send the materials, so long as they are received before the priority deadline. I'm not sure whether this is the case at grad schools.

I have my LOR writers lined up, and I'm preparing for the GRE and GRE subject. I'm just not sure when I should submit things. The only thing that's clear is that Jan. 15 is the typical priority deadline.

Once you know where you are applying - submit your GRE scores. Things like GRE scores, transcripts, LORs, etc. can take a long time to get processed so better submit them early than start fretting when you see that your application is missing things close to the deadline.

So there is no logistical problem with sending GRE scores before the main application bit? I understand that some schools receive GRE reports in periodic batches…so if all goes well the AdCom will look at my application, and then pull up my GRE scores.

A related question: Are my chances of acceptance increased if I submit my transcript early, before I receive this fall’s grades? Something tells me no: at least one school said that it is better to submit the entire application packet, because sending things in piece-by-piece slows down the application review process, and bogs everyone down with unnecessary paperwork. But still, if my chances are increased at some of these other schools than I’ll let 'em have the application early, and submit the final fall grades if requested.

Yes - it’s fine to submit your GRE scores before the app (they do sometimes come in batches like you said). (I called and asked a grad program about this last year and this is what they told me.)

About your transcript question: I’m not so sure as I applied the fall after I graduated (spring) so my transcript was compete with all 4 years. Anyone else know about this?
