When to take Math subject tests

<p>Son has taken History, Latin and Chemistry subject tests after finishing the courses.</p>

<p>He has not, however, taken any math subject tests.</p>

<p>First off, should he, if a school only requires three subject tests, or doesn't require them at all? </p>

<p>He's applying for engineering major, so thinking they might want a math subject test down the line.</p>

<p>Worried about the timeline, as son has not taken "basic math" for a long time. Algebra in eighth grade, geometry in ninth grade, algebra two in tenth grade, and analysis in eleventh. Now is taking Calculus AB AP.</p>

<p>So, should he go back and take the Math I subject test now, even though the material is not as fresh in his head, or should he wait and take the Math II test later in the year, after doing most of calculus? Of course, apps will be in by this time. </p>

<p>I guess, simple question, when is the best time to take Math I, and did he miss the boat on the best time to take it and should just wait and take Math II and wish for the best?</p>

<p>Or should he even take it at all, if the colleges just say, three SAT IIs required, but he has no math subject test as an engineering major applicant. And the chem score was not that great, so really don't want that score to be his "hard" SAT score.</p>

<p>Oh, and son is not one to study for these tests, so how he tests is really based on what his "innate" knowledge is.</p>

<p>Just have him take the Math II, not I subject test asap. it would be a big mistake to apply as an engineering major and NOT have a math test score.</p>

<li>There is no “innate knowledge”. Innate are the instincts.</li>
<li>Yes, he should actually study for the test to do well. (Yeah, imagine that !!!)</li>
<li>There is nothing on the Math II test that requires knowledge of calculus. Its even more true for Math I I assume.<br></li>
<li>A decent engineering school will want to see a math II / science combination among the subject SATs submitted.</li>

<p>Thanks for the help, guys. Son is taking regular SAT in October, so should he take the SAT Math II in November or later? He will have already applied to all schools by the time he takes the November test. And you’re sure the Math II does not require Calculus? This is my hesitancy about taking the test too soon. Want him to have as much math as possible before he takes the Math II test. </p>

<p>Oh, and analysis is pre calculus, trigonometry.</p>

Ok if he is NOT applying EA or Ed, then yes have him take the math II test in Nov. and yes, we are sure math II does not require calculus.</p>
