When to Take SAT for National Merit?

Any test date works to confirm NMSF, correct? I just have to send the scores to the NM Corporation?

I'm currently a junior, and am pretty sure that I did well enough on the PSAT to be a NMSF, based on my soph score of 218. (My state's cutoff is around 210, so even if I dropped a few points, I'd still make it.)

I'm in the midist of signing up for the January SAT, and since the SAT is only offered withing 3 hours driving distance twice a year - Jan and June, I'm stuck with that date.

Will that test date work?

PS. Good luck with Nov SAT scores everyone!!

You can use any SAT score you've taken previously, although recent scores are generally better, all other things equal.

Yes, since you're a junior any test date will work. When they notify you of becoming a semifinalist, it would be best to call them and make sure the scores you sent them this year will work.

If you want to take it again as a senior next year and send it to nmsc it has to be the oct, nov, or dec tests (the semifinalist packet says they strongly recommend oct or nov)

On a related note, how high of an SAT score do you have to get to confirm your national merit status? A certain range of the PSAT score?

I asked this question of a Dean of Admissions at a major university and he said most all NMSF qualifiers score sufficiently on the SAT to confirm their PSAT and it is nothing to worry about. From his answer, I assumed it was not necessary to exceed or even meet the PSAT score, but that most qualifiers naturally do. My S took the SAT in Nov for first time and scored 2340 after qualifying NMSF with a 211 PSAT.
