When to take SAT II subject tests

Hi all,

My son is a junior. What is the best time to take subject tests (Math, Physics/Chemistry)? If he is in Chemistry Honors, can he still take SAT II Chemistry? What books does he need to prepare? Any input is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Sona

@Sona2013 taking the chemistry subject test right after the course finishes is generally a good idea, but not necessary. I took Math II and physics October of my senior year, several months after my physics course. In terms of textbooks, I have no experience with subject test prep books so I won’t comment on that.

Whatever course he takes, he should take the SAT II for it fairly soon after taking the final exam at the end of the school year. That way all the information is still all fresh in his memory. There are study books in the bookstores for any of the SAT II subjects that include practice tests. He could look at one to get a feel for how the test is structured and how they pose the questions, and maybe find out if there are subjects that may have have been skimmed over during the school year that might come up on the SAT II and need to be addressed.

Don’t wait until fall of his senior year if he is planning on applying early to selective schools. I waited to take my subject tests for the first time ever until October of my senior year, and though everything turned out alright, it was incredibly stressful.
