When to take the GRE?

I thought it was a little early for me to take the GRE, I just finished one year of college - yet, I just read through some stuff in practice books and the study preparation seems similar to the SAT and my mindset is very adjusted to that right now. My method of studying is generally pretty intensive and I cannot do it within the school year - leaving only the summer to do this, which is reasonable since that allots me four months to study and then take the test. I was told that it is ideal to have the test done by late junior year to senior year. But I am a little bit ahead in my course curriculum

I realize that there is a 5 year expiration date, which would give me only a couple of years to look for a masters program and I recently read about a new "drastic" change that the ETS will make to the GRE for the 2011 tests, which is the whole reason I am asking, because these two factors alone and my age do not correlate well. But I know for sure that I want to go to graduate school.

I don't think I will reach my anticipated score within one try either so I am betting that it might take 3 tries or so before I finally get there - or as good as I could possibly do.

I guess I just need advice. Despite both my brother and my father having gone to graduate school, neither has taken the GRE, which surprises me... I don't want to rush into anything I am not ready for. Thanks for any help!
