I have an eighth grade son, and I'm a bit unsure about when he should take the PSAT-- I thought you only took it in 11th grade to qualify for National Merit Scholarships. But I see some people take it in ninth grade. Is that just for practice? Thanks!

When to Take the Test
The PSAT is only given once a year, usually in the second week of October. Because the test contains sophomore-level material, you should take it after the completion of your second year of high school, in the fall of your junior year. Many students also take the PSAT in their sophomore year; if you choose to take the test at that time, be sure to take it the following year as well in order to qualify for any junior-level scholarships or recognition programs.

It only counts your junior year, but some people do take it for practice before that. My school only allows you to take it your sophomore and junior year. It just depends how much practice you need.

My son's school pays for sophomores and juniors to take the PSAT. Freshmen are allowed to take it, depending on test availability, but are required to pay the fee.
