I am a junior from Mississippi, a state ruled by the ACT almost exclusively. As many of the colleges on my list are located in the northeast and receive more SATs than ACTs, however, I will definitely be taking the SAT and subject tests in U.S. History and Lit. Generally, when is a good time to take the SAT? I've heard that March is ideal because it gives plenty of time before early decision deadlines to retake tests, but I can't help but thinking I should take it first in November or December. Any input?

I personally would recommend taking the SAT I in March, then in May or June if you are not satisfied, and taking SAT II subject tests in May/June/October/November (if you are not taking the SAT I that day, obviously). I was not satisfied with my SAT I score in March and took it again in June, got a 2400. October/November for SAT I is too late, in my opinion.

What was your March score, Sx91, and what did you do to prepare?

I am also a junior. I was planning on a March-ish test date too, but I got 800/760/720 on the practice exam when I took it for the first time, so I'm taking it in December. Take the practice exam - you may score very well, in which case you should consider taking it in Dec/Jan.

my rec is for rising juniors to prep hard after their soph year, and take the SAT 1 in Oct. Also, you'll be prepared to do well on the psat -- some colleges give away automatic merit money to NMF.

Always take the SAT subject tests in the spring of the year you are taking the course (preferably honors/ap), while the material is fresh. Since the AP tests are in May, the May & June dates are perfect for Subject tests. Also suggest taking Math 2 if you're taking pre-calc this year.

Thanks guys. I have another question. Since I took American History last year in the tenth grade, what books would you all recommend as good review guides for the subject tests? One more thing. Should I plan on taking the Math IIC?

In March I received a 2170. Although disappointed, I didn't start studying for the June examination until two weeks before the test (the time before was allocated for AP exams), when I took 4 practice tests from the Official College Board SAT book. It helps a lot.
