When to take?

I just asked some ?'s on SAT and ACT on the parents forum and have a couple ?'s for you guys.

My D has honors biology in 10th grade should she schedule for SAT II on a date close to the end of the class. (block sched) Also she will take Alg.II this yr should she schedule SAT II for Math or wait until she takes precalc?

Any info on when to take history or english lit is appreciated. She will not take all of them but we are trying to determine a schedule that spreads out the tests she will take. If she can get any done in 10th grade it will only make things easier.

Somethign towards the end of your D's biology course, she should go to the library or bookstore and look through some SAT II Bio review books to see if her class has covered the material. If it has, fantastic; if it has not, either she can wait to take AP Bio or she can study some for the test and take it. I've seen some people taking the SAT II Bio after Honors Bio and aceing it and others who bomb it - it all depends on your Bio class and the amount of time you put in to practice and preparation.

As for the SAT II Math, it depends on what colleges she intends to apply to and what she wants to major in (yes, its early to decide that, but she should have some general idea to base her decision off of). If she's interested in the sciences, math or engineering, then she should wait till after pre-calc if possible and then take the SAT II: Math IIC. The test covers precalculus material but has an easier curve and with a good amount of practice, it's not too hard ( ~10% of test takers get a 800). If she's not interested in any of those areas and wants to take the easier SAT II: Math IC, taking it after Algebra II will work, but like the biology, make sure her classes have covered all the material (disclaimer: I havn't taken the IC so I don't know exactly what it covers). Also note that some colleges (I think the UC's) will not accept the Math IC.

Other SAT II tests should be taken when she completes the equivilant class in school. (US History after US History in school, AP level preferred). I've heard that the English Lit doesn't require much background in literature, but I don't know much about it personally.

Many students opt to wait till junior year to take SAT II's because many of the equivalent courses are commonly taken in 11th grade (APUSH, pre-calc, sometimes AP science classes, etc)
