When to visit freshman

Parents flying in from the west coast is not going to happen more than once in the fall. Should it be for Convocation or for Parent Weekend? Or, even, can a late September weekday visit (tied to another trip East) deliver the full S in H context experience? In other words, is Convocation or Parents Weekend not to be missed during Freshman year? Thank you.

I'd say Family Weekend. The Convocation is a one-hour program at the end of a relatively unstructured couple days. Family Weekend is a whole weekend of events for family members, at a time when your student will have places and faces he wants you to know.

I second the opinion of Gadad, Parent's Weekend is wonderful: your student will be eager to share classes, friends, favorite campus spots with you. And since there are so many other parents there you do not risk the embarassment they might feel escorting you around on a solo weekend. We were pleasantly surprised how gracious and welcoming the students, even upperclassmen, were towards us.
