my d needs to send in a deposit for a summer program taking place 7/20- 8/2. Does anyone know when the orientation and other activities for incoming freshman were last year? Just trying to get a rough idea if those things will mostly be in August or if they are spread out through the summer? not accepted yet at Tufts, but it is one of her top choices.
thx

Pre-orientation activities don't start til late-mid August so you're fine! They're scheduled so that as soon as they're done, the students can get to the regular orientation which takes places late August-early September, right before classes start.

Thanks for the info!

Tufts doesn't do a random "middle of the summer" orientation - I actually remember that some of my friends went to Orientation before senior year was even over. Orientation starts around August 30/31, and they have a few days to move in, meet with advisors to pick classes, and do the fun planned activities before they're joined by upperclassmen and classes start.

How many students do the outward bound camping-type orientation? Is it hard to get into the different orientation programs?

Also, how does it work if a student goes on an orientation trip schedule wise?
Am guessing they cannot move into the dorms early---?

There was a decent number of people this year, and to my knowledge it wasn't hard to get in.

pre-orientation people are allowed to move in early

Thanks-- S. is really interested in it.

Actually, the only pre-orientation people allowed to move in early are the ones taking part in ACT (Active Citizenship through Technology), FIT (fitness) and IO (International Orientation)... There are people in my hall who did Wilderness (the "camping one") and FOCUS (community service) who definately were not around during IO when I lived in the halls. FIT happens on campus, as does IO. I have no idea about where ACT actually takes place, because I didn't see them during my pre-orientation, except for one night of candle-pin bowling with IO and ACT.

My D did the backpacking trip last summer (she wanted the combo kayak/backpack trip but did not get in....so these are popular...apply early). She had a really great time, but is not chomping at the bit to go backpacking again anytime soon. We were actually amused when she wanted to go on this trip. The problem, from a parent's point of view, is that the pre-orientation trips and programs make move in really hard if you are coming from far away. For the locals or those within several hours drive, it is probably not an issue. This is how it went:
The trip took place 5 days before move-in. It was very challenging to schedule. We live in California. We had to put D on the plane w/backpack and gear and basically order everything from Bed, Bath and Beyond to pick up in Boston. We shipped several boxes also. I flew out 2 days before move in, picked up everything from B, B and B, went to the mail room and picked up the shipped boxes. The backpackers arrive the day before move in, but they stay together until the morning of move in. I showed up at the dorm, she showed up about t he same time (8 am-ish) and we moved her in. The backpack, sleeping bag and clothing were rank (they got rained on), so D had lots of laundry to do. I took the backpack and other gear back to California on the airplane. Not exactly how I invisioned moving my first kid into her college dorm. I got to see her from 8 am until approx 4:30 when the freshman go off to have dinner and meet their advising groups/advisor. I also got to see her for an hour or so the next day for another run to Target. Having said all that, she thought the trip was great and made some new friends right away.

Thanks for the info. S. is interested in the backpack/hiking one and also the fitness program. Scheduling is def. something to think about. It's still a 5 hour drive for us.
