When will colleges contact you?

I submitted the common app + supplements for two college so far and have not received emails or any form of contact from the colleges themselves, just confirmation emails from the common app. When, if ever, will I receive emails from the colleges themselves? I am just looking for a way to see if they have received my letters of rec and transcript.

Each school does this part differently. You can call the school and ask when you will receive an email indicating that your common app was received but usually it is within the a week or two after sending in your common app. They usually then send you an email on how to access your file so you can track other scores, recs and transcripts that have been received.

Although most schools follow up by email, my son has received 2 hard-copy mailed letters from schools he submitted the Common App to. These letters are important to hold on to because they usually assign you a User ID and a Password. You will need those to log on to the colleges website to check your application status (incomplete, what’s missing, complete, in review, admitted!) It took about a week for each snail mail letter to arrive from the time he submitted the application, supplement, and payment online.

Thanks for the help guys!
