Does anyone know when CommonApp typically crashes? For example, Dec. 31st at night? (Did it even crash last year?) If so, how long did it take to get back up?

It’s unlikely that it will crash, but if it does, there is no penalty for turning in your application slightly late… see the video from Dartmouth Admissions where she clearly states if things are mailed on the 2nd or sent in then (application is due on the 1st), it is okay.

How come it’s unlikely to crash? I guess I’m sort of scared seeing as how the UC server crashed so many times. Do you know if other Ivies follow Dartmouth’s policy?

If a technical problem prevents you from submitting your Yale application by midnight December 31st, please be reassured that you will still be able to submit it electronically after the deadline, when the problem has been resolved. ([Application to Yale College | Freshmen | Office of Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.yale.edu/admit/freshmen/application/index.html))

Also, please note that admissions officers are human beings and, as residents of the 21st century, have certainly dealt with broken servers themselves. Don’t worry. :)

I haven’t heard about the ComApp crashing. It seems like it’s usually the smaller things that crash, like UC’s server, or Georgetown’s, or other colleges that have their own application.

^That’s interesting haha. How BIG is the commonapp server?

@rockermcr, would you happen to know about the other ivies as well?
I applied EA to Yale btw (deferred), but I trust you guys the most, which is why i decided to post here :p

Wow I’m surprised Dartmouth and Yale accept late applications! Stanford said that last year more than 1000 apps were not received because there was a problem with last minute submissions!!! Right now I’m working on last minute revisions, but a warning for everyone out there FINISH your apps at least a day before the deadline!!

Actually, Common App crashed earlier today. Around 1~2pm Pacific Time if I remember correctly. They might have been just doing server maintenance actually, but either way it was unusable.

Oh yeah, I remember when it crashed around Dec. 10 when the Duke Interview Deadline was going on.

Who knows what’s going to happen when a million people decide to submit apps at 11:59pm on December 31st lol.

PS are west coast people held accountable to east coast time? If we finish at 9:00 (12:00 eastern on January 1st) does that still count?

Are internationals held accountable to local time or US time?

Can’t you press submit on Jan 1st? It doesn’t have to be by midnight.

^it usually is midnight of the 1st but Yale wants to be special… “Regular Decision application deadline is midnight on Dec. 31”

Ok, so it would ok to press submit for all other schools on the 1st? I already applied SCEA to Yale, so I’m not worried about that.

Check with the schools themselves, but as long as they say “Submit by Jan 1st,” you have until 11:59 PM Jan 1st to submit it. I’m not 100% on the whole EST/PST thing, but I’d play it safe and submit by 9 PM if I was PST.

Actually, I would submit it in the afternoon where there is no chance of it crashing and no worry about missing the deadline.

Out of curiosity, could Collegestress16 or someone else support the fact that Stanford did not receive 1000 applications because of last minute submissions (source)? I would be very surprised if Stanford did not review these applications because they were submitted a little late due to problems.

Most, if not all colleges know that there could be problems submitting applications at the last minute and will accept them a few hours late, and if circumstances lead to it, even later.

As for the east coast/west coast, I would advise to try and have your application in according to the time zone the school is located in, but when the admissions office is back into work, they will just have a huge block of applications to sort through and probably will not throw one out because it was a few hours later.

^This is true. It’s on Stanford’s website.

Aw, that’s terrible. Please please don’t let the common app website crash at the last minute because I still have applications to submit…

Yeah, ditto.
