Is GTech trying to become more selective?

I've been hearing of some quality applicants who have been deferred or denied admission.

What do you all think?

Is GTech trying to become more selective?

I've been hearing of some quality applicants who have been deferred or denied admission.

What do you all think?

Trying? They are, don’t you think?
1990: GT admits 69% of all applicants
2000: GT admits 57% of all applicants
2010: GT admits 52% of all applicants
2011: GT admits 51%
And 2012 was more competitive, with higher deposit rate than expected, so expect this year to be even more so.

GT is succeeding in becoming a much better school, attracting better students from across the nation. Way to go, GT! :-)

They had this on the website:

This years early admission student profile includes a 4.0 average GPA, 1460/2155 SAT score, with a predicted GPA of 3.3 after freshman year at Tech. Some 55 percent of applicants were accepted, 21 percent deferred and 21 percent denied; the rest did not complete their application files.

1460/2155 SAT? Wasn’t the average 1330/1990 just a few years ago? I’m thankful by next year I’ll be over the college admission process, as it’s been getting extremely competitive and stressful as of late.

Many of the kids with really high stats blanket the market with apps everywhere, and are admitted to many schools. So although GaTech’s enrolled freshman profile IS rising every year, it probably doesn’t quite match the admitted student profile. I agree though, admissions to many schools in top 50 or so are just getting more and more competitive every year, crazy.

For Tech’s Fall 2012 Freshman, Stats are: SAT Average 1405 Median 1410 and HS GPA3.91.

By the way, Tech accepts superscore this year, so obvious increasing in SAT/ACT scores couldn’t be misleading.

Hey thanks for the link. That’s good information. Is the superscoring new this year? Also, their description of how they handle scores sounds to me like they’ll convert ACT to SAT pts. and use that as score if it’s higher than SAT. I mean to call and ask but haven’t yet. My D has 1510 from those sections of SAT, but 36/36 on corresponding sections of ACT. Do you think they’ll count her as a 1600? She submitted both. They admitted her so doesn’t matter any more from that perspective, just wondering how her stuff looks for scholarship consideration.

Congratulations, celesteroberts! My D applied and admitted to Tech last year. She really likes Tech for the past semester. When she was applying, we wrote to Tech about some questions and got answers very quick. So I think you only need to send them emails if you have questions.

GT has superscored for a long time. They do convert ACT subscores to SAT scores.

As we have seen, though, tests are just one part of the review process. Grades, accomplishments, and essays count quite a bit.
