I applied on 11/29 for Electrical Engineering. I am an international student. so when can i expect a decision from UT??
I have a 2170 sat, 700 on math2 and chem and 720 on physics, 112 on toefl. great rec's good ec's and essays. and im in thr top 5% of my class. so do you'll think ill get in??

My son applied to UT in late October for Aerospace Engineering. His best SAT was 2320. He has passed 15 AP exams with 4s and 5s, including 5s in BC Calculus, Chemistry, and Biology. He has a 3.9 unweighted GPA from one of the top high schools in the Southwest and is a National Merit Scholarship finalist. His essays were very good. His extracurriculars were only fair. We also visited Texas and met with the Aerospace Engineering department.

He has been accepted by Michigan, Purdue, Georgia Tech, and Texas A&M for engineering. So far, not a peep out of Texas. We do not understand why Texas takes so long to make a decision.

Beaudreau congratulations on all those acceptances. i hope we all hear back from UT fast. also, do you think i have a shot at UT?

SoccerGuy. You look good to me. Georgia Tech and Michigan would be reaches but not out of the question. Purdue, Texas, and Texas A&M should all admit you.

Of course, my opinion does not matter one bit. It’s up to UT.

keep in mind that i am an international student. i have heard that admission is very tough for international students. this is what i got from UT admissions fb page-
International Students :- (i read this a while back so i dont remember exact numbers)
Applied- 3000 and something
admitted- 25%
enrolled- 360 approx
international students made up 3.8% of the incoming class
so does this make it a reach/high reach for me???

SoccerGuy,

I am just a parent. However, I saw international students with stats like yours getting accepted to Purdue and Texas A&M, which are both public universities with very good engineering schools, like Texas. That’s why you look strong to me.

Where else have you applied and been accepted? What is your native country?

i have been accepted to Purdue and Ohio state an was rejected by georgia Tech. i was also rejected by uiuc ea but i when i applied there i had a much lower sat score.
my native country is India. The fact that texas admits very few international students makes me doubtful of my chances

Have you visited Purdue, Ohio State, or Texas, yet? Texas is a great school in a big City with a huge number of things to do. Ohio State is also in Columbus, also a big capitol city. We did not visit the school, but I have been there on business. Austin >> Columbus, plus better weather.

We all really liked Purdue. It’s more of a small-town environment. Although Purdue is quite a large university, it has the feel of a smaller campus and is very easy to get around. The revamped first-year engineering program (for all engineering students) really impressed us. Purdue is also building a brand-new electrical engineering hall and the EE department head is a countryman, Venkataramanan (Ragu) Balakrishnan. He was first in his class at IIT and got his Masters Degree and PhD from Stanford.

Purdue Engineering is a great brand too, with over 80,000 alumni worldwide. Like Georgia Tech, they have great co-op and intern opportunities. Purdue also has one of the nation’s largest job fairs.

My point is, don’t despair. You have some great opportunities already, even if UT is a “no.”

well thank you for all the info. At purdue im into Computer engineering. i am aware that purdue is an amazing school. but i would personally prefer UT though i would go to purdue happily too.

Generally speaking, you have 27% chance of being admitted as a foreign student, based on 2011 data (www.utexas.edu/academic/ima/sites/default/files/SHB11-12Students.pdf).

Since you’re from India and that’s one country that UT gets a lot of apps from (also China and Korea), your chances are probably lower, (approximately 12.56% of all 4631 foreign students are from India - undergrad + grad).

And since only 687 foreign student got admitted as freshmen in 2011, if the 12.56% is also true for first-time freshmen, that means that only 86 Indians were admitted.

Now of those 86, the number of EE’s from India is probably 10 at the most.

And the fact that the average SAT for engineering is 2026, your SAT score is good, but not great. Your SAT subject test scores are rather average. Math2 of 700 is only 50 percentile. ([2013 SAT/ACT Scores | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/whyut/profile/scores))

I would put your chances at 10-20%.

Thanks for that getoveritnow. That was really helpful. statistics speak for themselves. im not hoping for any positive outcome but it will definitely be great if i do eventually get accepted :D

My son heard from the UT engineering department at the end of Feb.

Do you remember when your son applied? I can’t understand why Texas is so slow. My son got all his out-of-state applications submitted between October 15 and October 25. Texas A&M took ten days to accept him. Purdue accepted on December 13, Michigan on December 20, and Georgia Tech on January 4. Georgia Tech was late, but kept everyone informed of the reason for the delay (common app issues), and then sent an e-mail with a new firm date for notifications.

I wouldn’t blame my son if he felt like Texas didn’t want him very much, even if they do ultimately accept him. It’s too bad, we had a nice visit.

^It’s nothing personal. It is just the way UT operates. Almost all applicants get their response towards the end of February.

It sounds like he has several very good options if he choices not to wait for Texas.

That is the way that UT does it. My son got his application in on the last day, but he heard at the same time as most every other applicant to engineering. (some heard before).

It is so hard to patient, but there is nothing to be done but wait about 6 more weeks.

Thanks Kldat and Lisiatc. Of course we should wait. Texas is a great school in a great town and very strong in Aerospace Engineering. Texas is second in the country in aerospace jobs. And we live in Arizona, so my son is not that thrilled about going to school up north weather-wise.

There is no downside to waiting and it’s a decision my son will have to live with for four years. So I will certainly encourage him to wait. Still, he will likely be influenced in his ultimate decision by who seemed to want him the most. It’s just human nature. By the time Texas (likely) offers him admission, he will have had two months to get fired up about the other schools. Texas has also trailed the other schools in mail and e-mail (basically nothing). Texas will definitely be playing catch-up by the end of February.

A move from Arizona to Michigan would definitely be a big climate change! I hope he decides to wait for Texas and I hope he gets in.

Thanks very much!
