I finished my common application on September 21 and submitted ACT and transcript within a week after. I still haven’t received any indication that they have started looking at my application. it still just says “All of your required application materials have been received by the November 1st deadline. Thank you! Admission decisions are sent on a rolling basis beginning in October. All students who submit complete applications by the November 1st deadline will receive their admission decisions on this website by January 31st.”. Is it taking longer because I am an out of state student? thanks
I’m an in-state applicant and I haven’t heard back yet either. I’m not sure if it has anything to do with you being out of state, what are your stats? People might be able to help more if they’re posted
My Stats are:
ACT: 28
GPA: 3.4 weighted
EC: 4 years varsity in 2 sports, Tennis team captain, 4 years Arkansas scholar, 3 years Honor society, nominated president of Beta club.
Which school at UMN did you apply to? All of the schools have different admissions standards.
I’m in the same situation
I received my decision about a week ago and applied on the November 1st deadline as an out of state applicant. I have heard of in state applicants receiving acceptances as soon as 13 days after. I applied engineering for computer science and have a 35 act 4.2 weighted average if that helps.
If you are applying to CSE for CS your stats are not likely to get priority attention. Are you applying as full pay?
I applied for computer science. I know I do not have a huge chance to be accepted but i was just wondering why it was taking so long
UMN does Rolling Admissions so they will let you know as soon as they decide. If you still haven’t received a decision yet, they may have not read your application yet or they are comparing you with other applicants with similar stats.

Did you specifically apply to CSE or CLA? (the computer science major is available in both colleges. BTW, you are not admitted to a major - you are admitted to a college). Also, what is your unweighted GPA?

True. To be super accurate, UMN admits the strongest applicants quickly, regardless of when they applied, as long as they did so by one of the deadlines. (Historically, they have also admitted a few strong candidates even after the deadline). They really like those high stats because it helps rankings. Admissions began in October, nearly a month before the first deadline, and it’s very possible to see someone who applied after you did get admitted before you just due to the strength of their application. However, it’s also possible to see timing differences due to In-state or OOS status, specific high school, or specific college applied to. Every year is a bit different. The best gauge for admission is to look at the academic profile of those admitted to the class of 2021: https://admissions.tc.umn.edu/academics/profile.html
The primary factors that determine admission status are: GPA/Ranking, test scores, and course load. Also, the college you are applying to really factors in, as they all have different levels of selectivity. Therefore, if someone’s stats are, say, fine for CLA but a bit of a reach for first-choice CBS, there can easily be a holdup as they continue to assess your application against others applying to CBS. In other words, not all delays automatically point to “bad news” (and it’s a bit early yet to be thinking that anyway).
In addition to the above primary factors, there are secondary considerations that might move your application along more quickly, such as being URM or first-gen, or being in the military, or being a legacy/benefactor family, etc. The admissions website lists most of the secondary factors. Essays, rec. letters and subject scores are also considered secondary.
Looking at the stats of those admitted thus far, it really does appear that they are still working through the slam-dunk or near-slam-dunk applications. Those with lower GPA’s or test scores might be on the backburner for now. A couple of monkey-wrenches worth mentioning - and I apologize if this causes anxiety because it’s not clear how they will play out - will be whether there’s an additional small flood of applications in the wake of ED/EA decisions released over the next week (because some of them, if very strong, might bump the backburners even further to the back), and whether UMN will reserve the end of January for “Deferred” notifications only (vs. sending out one more push of accepteds at the same time). Every year they tweak the notification process a bit so it’s hard to establish a consistent pattern for those still waiting.
I applied to CSE
@rispoli what was your 2nd choice? You are in “reach” category for CSE.
I believe for second choice I chose CLA
@rispoli your ACT is fine for CLA so it’ll come down to your UW GPA. One thing to know is that the CS major will be rigorous regardless of which college you enter. There are additional math and science requirements for the BS degree (through CSE), while the BA degree option (through CLA) will allow you to double major or add a minor. One thing that many don’t realize is that someone in CLA can always “replicate” the CSE experience simply by taking those additional science and math courses (assuming you can get into them). But you are not “required” to do so. That flexibility is a definite advantage of getting a BA.
Here are some comparisons:

UMN got back to me fairly quickly. I am an OOS who applied to CSE. I submitted my application on September 29th and I heard back on the 15th of October. I then found out about my Honors College acceptance 5 days later. I hope that helps. Wishing you the best of luck!
Abenge, could you give us your stat.
My son got accepted to CSE but still waiting for Honor.
His stat is ACT 34, UWGPA 3.95 (6/620). AP scholar with distiction…
Does he have any chance for honor?
UMN does rolling admissions, that means if your stats are well above average you will hear the decision sooner.
Update: My application status hasn’t changed… I think I will get my decision on the very last day lol
My son has very similar stats as you and he hasn’t heard yet either. applied 10/15. hang in there!
@gopheralum94 , even I have not heard back till now and am anxiously waiting for them to change the so boring text on my application tracker.
