@rispoli have you heard anything yet?
My D’s application portal changed to one line. Major - CS in CSE. I talked to an admissions counselor this morning and she told me everyone should hear back by next Wednesday (1/24). The portal changed to one liner when we checked two hours later - don’t know if this has anything to do with the conversation. I was little frustrated and expressed that to the AC. So I can’t tell if it moved forward because how frustrated I sounded or it was just a coincidence.
She even recalled our conversation last week (may be I sounded frustrated back then as well). I was surprised at that. She even noticed we have been checking our portal frequently. In any case when I asked for an honest opinion on my D’s application, she said CSE is competitive and that she has a good chance for CLA. While she said she has no insight into the review process or decision, I think may be she did and from the way she sounded it appears my D likely will not be admitted to CSE.
In anycase, at least we will know tonight. I know there are a few anxious applications, just wanted to share this. Worst case scenario is 5 more days if what the admissions counselor said is true.
@cmd7131 oy. well thank you for that information. we are still waiting and checking the application tracker multiple times a day now.
@cmd7131 - took the liberty of looking up your D’s stats on another thread and admit to being a tad surprised that the UMN admissions person seemed to suggest she wouldn’t get in. Hoping that individual is just going off the very obvious fact that she’s a shoe-in for CLA. At least you now know what the holdup is! Had they decided by now she would have been given her decision. No news is still good news - crossing my fingers for her!
@JBStillFlying can I be so bold and possibly obnoxious to ask you your thoughts on my son?
3.4 UW GPA, 29 ACT, OOS, legacy, applied to CLA first and CEHD second.
@gopheralum94 - a 3.4 uw is the hold up there. But as he looks very good for CEHD and they haven’t placed him yet, that’s still good news for the time being. [-O<
@JBStillFlying thank you! Your guidance is so appreciated here!!
@JBStillFlying, no problem. Appreciate your feedback. I know my D is borderline for competitive schools/majors because of her ACT score, but she has a good academic record. She has taken the most difficult courses possible. She will have Calc 3 done before she gets to college. So I know she is a good student. She is extremely hard working and always wants to do her best even in the most challenging situations. She was a gifted student at her school, was selected for a software engineer internship out of several applicants, won her school chemistry bee competition twice in her middle school and was selected for regionals. She has several awards and honors. I know she has all the qualifications to be successful. She is just a slow test taker, she over analyzes and can’t complete standardized tests on time. That is her weakness, but she gave it all she had. Let’s see.
ack, our tracker changed to one line too!
Please note: This is the most up-to-date information available to our staff.
All of your required application materials have been received by the deadline. Thank you!
Good to hear @gopheralum94. Good luck and best wishes.
@cmd7131 her ACT might have only been 30 but that’s within the 50% range. Also, they want women so she has a bit of a hook. Hopefully it’s enough to push her in. IIRC her grades were on an upward trend which also helps, as does her rigorous courseload. Here’s hoping for the best!
Still no update in my application tracker personally. Extremely frustrating considering I was accepted into some other difficult direct admit programs that I was not expecting to get into-especially before UMN/Carlson. I called in to admissions counselors a few times, asking if they would like to see anything else in my application while I am waiting for the finalization of my first semester grades. They of course, were no help, and tried to brush me off as quickly as possible.
At this point, Carlson is my first choice. I met with my high school guidance counselor this afternoon upon the completion of my last Mid-Term Final. My GPA has increased to a weighted 4.12. While at the Women Mean Business program through Carlson last summer, they said the average GPA was a weighted 4.0 for accepted undergraduate students.
I of course will send my first semester grades, since it shows an upward trend in my GPA (that is what I believe was holding my application back), but cannot do so until the school grade-close date next Tuesday the 23rd. What I am wondering, if at that point, should I begin to consider my other schools more strongly? By the time my updated transcript is sent in and processed to my file/admissions, is it too late to be hanging on to hope? @JBStillFlying can you or any others with advice give insight on this?
@corarose what is your current uw GPA? Weighted GPA’s can include different weights so are not the most accurate indicator.
Realizing that it’s very frustrating to be kept on hold, you can take comfort in that you don’t need to make ANY decisions till 5/1 and that the admissions cycle is only about mid-way through at this point - you still have plenty of time.
@JBStillFlying I have a cumulative unweighted of 3.87, with a semester unweighted of 3.98. Taking AP Calculus BC as a sophomore lowered my cumulative unweighted GPA more than I would have liked. I still got a good grade in the class, but it played with the numbers slightly.
@corarose and your ACT is 29, correct? (from your chance me thread). Those stats should hopefully do it. Two years ago a good friend of my D16’s got in with the exact same stats but he had to wait till the end of Jan. Was convinced he wouldn’t get in. If they wanted you in CLA they would have placed you there by now so there is definitely hope.
Hope you get in - with your excellent stats and other offers, Carlson would be lucky to get you!
@JBStillFlying thank you for all of your help. An overwhelming process for many people. We all appreciate the advice you give on here. Makes taking things in to perspective easier for all of us.
I have two friends who had their trackers update to “Your application is being very carefully considered” instead of the typical “All of your materials are in.” I think this may be a sign of bad news to come considering they are on the lower end of median U of M stats.
@gopheralum94 @cmd7131 You may be able to find out right now. Log on to MyU, click Key Links, Student center, and then Communications Center on the far right of the screen. It may say nothing now but I received my acceptance on that page with a letter titled “Admit” around 9:00 PM
@JohnStamoskian1, thanks. There is nothing in MyU communications center right now. Will check back later around 9pm CST. If there is still nothing, we will check around midnight if we are still awake and up to it, otherwise we will just wait until tomorrow AM. Even if there is “Admit” title, there is no way for us to know if it is for CSE or CLA I presume. My D is really interested in CS in CSE only. If we get BA CS in CLA, there is very low chance, almost zero chance I would say, she will go there since we already have an acceptance at a reasonably competitive CS program in Engineering at another similar large public school. It is definitely farther than UMN, harder to travel to and back home, and a bit more expensive, but we will see how it all shakes out.
I have been following this thread closely for a while and I know you were anxious to get a decision. Congrats on your acceptance.
As @JohnStamoskian1 said, a new message popped up in communication center exactly around 9pm. It says Admit Alternate, WaitList Other. So my D wasn’t accepted to CSE which is kind of what I thought would happen, given it took this long and from the way her admissions counselor sounded this morning.
Not the outcome we expected. My D will definitely not go to UMN if it is not CS in CSE. We only chose BA CS in CLA simply because we thought we have to choose a 2nd major and that was the closest to what she is interested in. I see there are others who go into CSE with a 30 ACT and similar GPA. It was partly my D’s fault for not applying early. She wanted to write a good common app essay and do the UMN essay even though they were not required. She strongly believed those essays will stand out, portray who she really is and help her case. Perhaps it didn’t.
Anyway, we will move on. We will still keep the waitlist option open but we realize it will be hard to move off the waitlist.
Congrats to everyone who got in and will attend - best wishes at UMN, and good luck to others who are still waiting.
