littlefalls - don’t feel bad. My OOS S is NMF, 4.0 UW, 5/350, 35 ACT, 9 APs - and he got $1K/year. Why bother giving him anything? Like that even makes a dent in the OOS COA… and it is truely one of his top choices. But he won’t be going there for $47K/year.

^Ditto my friend. Ditto.

kttmom…wow I just don’t get their reasoning. What is your son’s major and where is he going instead? My son will still attend because it is tops for Materials Engineering and he is the kind of boy and student that will take full advantage of all that is offered. If we lived in state IL he would definately be going there or Purdue if they had a reputable Materials program. He would have free tuition to our instate U…but they do not even have Materials Engineering as a major…so we are paying the price. I also only have one child attending college. All the best…thanks for writing.

@littlefalls

I know I’m really lucky to get the scholarship, I’m actually quite surprised, but I think people underestimate their OOS aid, because OOS students are typically far superior academically to in-state students, so they want them to come to their school after all.

I’m not a female engineering candidate, and I’m not URM, I honestly think my only decent hook is being from Kentucky, my ECs were weak

Are you, by any chance, a first generation college student? Because that is also a big hook at Michigan in particular. Combined with your geographic diversity, that would likely make you a really unique candidate at Michigan.

Did you receive similar offers at any of the other schools you applied to, lightja?

littlefalls - My sons major is mechanical engineering. If he doesn’t get into one of his Ivys, it is looking like Penn State will be the likely choice (got into Honors college there). I have a D who is currently a junior in college now and one coming up behind my S, so finances are a big part of his decision.

No hooks - just a smart well rounded white kid…

kttmom: Was Purdue a choice for him? My son did get the $10k/yr award there and they are highly regarded for Mechanical Eng. I am also orginally from PA and I will never forget when a good friend was so shocked when his Valedictorian daughter did not get the expected free ride to Harvard. He has 6 kids, but his wife is a Dr. and he a computer specialist…so she attended Penn State Honors College for science and loves it!! Will the Ivies give him some $$. Unfortunately, middle class white boys with financially responsible parents that save and have no debt are dropped from the scholarship mix. Where in PA are you…I lived in Lancaster. All the best.

lightja: Please don’t mind us grilling you…we are all just sooo jealous
Thanks for being such a good sport about it…Michigan is lucky to have you.

We are not in PA, so paying OOS there too, but it is much more reasonable.
The Ivies should give decent financial aid (some with no loans) because he will be in school with a sibling 3 of his 4 years.
Purdue was not on his list, but he practically has a free ride at Michigan State - unfortunately Michigan State doesn’t seem to be high on his list after a visit in Feb. We have saved some $$ and are able to pay a reasonable amount for him to be happy - but $47K is way out of our budget range.

College is what you make of it and I am sure your son will do well where ever he lands. You are right $47K is ridiculous…but our son will have plenty of skin in the game as well. We offered to cover one amount and he is responsible for the rest…his choice all the way. We just hope that it will be all that he dreams it will be…he is also realizing how fortunate he is to be actually attending there. Many kids have come up to him and asked, are you really able to afford to go there? He is a little embarrased which I am glad about…good reality check for him. At least 75% of his college bound high school peers go to our in state U’s. (Nebraska)

I just received notification that I received the Geisinger scholarship.
I’m obviously thrilled, but a little stressed over this March 15th response date…
I’m waiting on a bunch of other schools, most of which I would choose over Michigan, regardless of scholarship… Does anyone know if I’m allowed to accept the Scholarship, pay my deposit fee, but then later choose not to attend Michigan? I know I’d lose the deposit fee but that’s fine with me…
In other words, is acceptance of the scholarship a binding commitment to attend michigan?

There’s something on WA about them requesting my parents’ 2009 tax returns. Does this mean I have to wait even longer before getting my financial award estimate? Or will they still give me an estimate sometime soon, and then check the tax returns when they receive it to make sure everything is OK?

Were you notified by email or snail mail?

I have read different places that they aren’t supposed to make you decide before May 1st and you can ask for an extension. If they say No - I think your plan is a good one.

I was notified by Snail Mail…
It was pretty shocking, but i kind of figured it out quickly because i had just gotten a generic letter from the school on monday so i assumed it had to be something unique…nonetheless it still was amazing to hear!

Lol it’s no problem! I don’t mind at all, I’m just relieved I don’t have to worry about it now hah.

Anyways, I don’t really know if I’m a first generation college student. My mom dropped out of high school and my dad dropped out of college, so he didn’t graduate, but he was a college student at one point, nobody else in my family has gone to college though, so I’d say probably. I think I marked it, but also said my dad had some college, so if I was or not is down to their technical definition, so if that’s a big hook at Michigan, then yeah, that’s definitely a factor, along with being from Kentucky

I’m male, white, not NMF, 33 ACT (35 math), 3.88/4.04 UW/W GPA, 100% in BC Calculus, going in for engineering

those are really my biggest hooks/not hooks imo.

Congrats Hotfutureengineer: We again are all so jealous. Could you please share some sats, as well as need/non need, first generation college student etc. etc. state you live in etc. What is your first choice if U MI is not as you imply?? Thanks I am guessing MIT, Stanford, Cornell perhaps??

Thanks! Some quick stats:
35 ACT, 100+ GPA, class doesnt rank but i’m unofficially 4/555, 2310 on SAT, 3 SAT2s over 750… some good leadership ECs but nothing engineering/math/science related and no research so i was shocked…
I’m from Long Island, NY, caucasian, non need…

I applied ED to UPenn and I got deferred so I’m really hoping for that, but otherwise top choices include Yale, Cornell and Duke… this DEFINITELY made UM rise on my list for sure… my sister also does attend Michigan and she is a Stamps Scholar, so it would be great to be saving my parents $40,000 a year combined, but we’ll see what happens come April 1st!

oh and female if that makes a difference!

@hotfuturengineer- Check with university about binding agreement or not.

Hot: How does your sister like Michigan? Do you know if she signed up for the mentor program at all as a freshman? Congrats again…your stats are very impressive and well deserving of the scholarship.
