When will we hear about financial aid and scholarships?

hotfutureengineer, my son got a $20,000 per year scholarship from the UM engineering department and it had a deadline on it too so he was going crazy not knowing what to do. He spoke to the engineering dept and it turned out he just had to accept the scholarship by that date and not admission. So it may be the same way for the geisinger. Just know that our head guidance counselor said it is illegal to pay a deposit to a school and then still wait for other offers unless it is a waitlist situation. She said if the school(s) found out about it they could renege their offers of admission.

“because OOS students are typically far superior academically to in-state students”

I hear this frequently, but I never see any actual statitics to support it.

I would not argue that OOS students have a lower acceptance rate and, by extension, better stats but I don’t know the actual numbers. I wonder if there are such statistics published; such as, OOS vs instate admissions stats, graduation rates, med/law school acceptance rates, graduation gpa, etc.

We Michiganders are so down on our luck that we get a little senstive about statements like the above without imperical data to support it.

crl123: Pass that scholarship $$$ on to us if you are undecided…Michigan is my engineering OOS son’s dream school and he is planning on attending…just can’t imagine why any one would not choose Michigan Engineering …unless you are holding out for MIT, Stanford or Cal Tech. Lucky dilema you have :)

littlefalls – Actually my son is very much interested in Michigan. It’s down to Michigan versus one other regular decision school. But as you know, with the price of college we really need to wait to see if the other school offers anything before making a final decision. He would not have accepted the scholarship at Michigan if it wasn’t a real possibility for him. And if the other school turns out to be a better financial option we will let UM know immediately so they can pass the money on to someone else. So who knows, maybe our sons will be in class together! You’re right, you can’t get much better than Michigan engineering and my son feels honored to have been accepted, particularly with a scholarship offer. He knows not everyone is so lucky.

I got my decision in just 4 days. $5,500 in unsubsudized loans! I’d have to pay every cent of my education at UMich, and it’s been my dream school since I was born, but it’s not happening. Has anyone showed Michigan a scholarship award from another school (I got a 110k at Texas A&M) and had Michigan give them more money? I can’t believe they can’t give me a subsudized loan.

Some financial aid summary notices are now available online at Wolverine Access.

S got his financial aid award today:
$5.5K in loans
$3K work study
$13.5K GAP

That’s it for U Michigan - it’s off the short list…

Everyone check WA! I just got an estimate of my aid award (they’re asking for tax returns for verification)!!!

Here’s my package!
$16.4k–Grants
$2.5k—Work Study
$5.5k—Loans

Woot, I’m really excited and I’m going to pay my deposit right away! One question though. This doesn’t list the Michigan competitive scholarship, or any other aid from the state of MI. Do they just not list this yet? I got a 31 ACT so I should for sure get the MCS right?

kttmom: Did u get a letter or went online? Your kids had great stats…do you think maybe some $$ down the road is a possibility when and if some of that $$ is turned down??

CRL123: Keep us posted and again all the best!!

can someone tell me whats considered generous/large/miniscule? i got my estimate today too…its definitely less though not too significantly than some of the above posters.

I got my offer today… all I got was $5,500 in loans… that’s not going to cut it for me.

Why didn’t I get any scholarships?? are they still sending out notices of out of state scholarships? I’m qualified…I think

They sent an email that the financial estimate was available on wolverine.

If by some miracle they give him a scholarship we will reconsider, but with that package ($13,5K gap over out EFC with $5.5K in loans already) there is no way Michigan is financially viable. Oh well…

Sorry, kttmom and soadquake, that really stinks. Are you guys in-state or OOS?

eivita3, are you instate or OOS and what’s your EFC?? I got $16.4k grants, $2.5k work study and 5.5k loans. I’m very very happy with this, but since my EFC was 0, I guess this is average for instate?

OOS Engineering, EFC=0, $18.8k grants, $3k work study, and $7.6k loans. But still, OOS tuitions are ridiculously high…

soadquake, i got the exact same thing, 5500 in loan, 3000 without interest and 2500 with i think… ugh

im OOS too

I got:

Grant:$9510
Work Study:$2,500
Loans:$6,000

Pretty manageable for my family…I think im getting the Michigan Competitive Scholarship as well as some local scholarships so my decision is pretty much SET!!!

Nice Ron! So are they not listing any state money like the competitive scholarship?

Also, are these estimates for everyone, or have people gotten guaranteed aid packages?

I got the standard $5500 in loans at least some of them are subsidized. But wow $47,000 is the cost of attendance at UM, I’m not really sure I want to attend anymore especially with such an abysmal amount of aid offered. :/
