When writing a personal essay

Is it alright (or is it ever look down upon) to use second person pronouns such as 'you'? I used it specifically in my opening paragraph (a hook, if you will) because I felt it made my essay a little more interesting.

Please help me out. This is the only reason I havent submitted my application.

bumpity bump…

someone please help me :-/

Also, would it be too cliche to start off with a question?

I would not recommend starting off with a question.

thanks

this is what i how i was going to start off, “When was the last time you used regular Elmer’s glue?”

Would it be better than to say this, “The last time I remember using glue extensively was while making a Mother’s Day Card, and that was 10 years ago”

It depends. Can you replace the “you” with “one” and still have it work? “You” can be okay, if it would have been awkward to change it to something else or it’s best for the style of your essay.

As for starting off with a question, it’s another matter of preference. It might not seem formal, but do adcoms really want to see completely formal writing? We don’t know, but it’s a matter of preference, personality, and style.

So, ask yourself instead, was using “you” and starting out with a question the best fit for your essay? Is it a matter of your personality and style? Was there no other option?

you’re welcome. Yeah! You can re-word the question into a statement for the beginning of your essay. =]
Or something along the lines of:
“Elmer’s glue, an item I used so rarely, leads me back ten years ago while I was crafting a mother’s day card.”

thanks for the tips

you’re welcome! if you need any help just lemme know.

no, thats bs. it sounds stupid if you change it into a statement.

keep it as it is. its actually a pretty random and interesting question.

i mean, if the rest of the essay shows that you have control over your grammar, then why should it matter?

i mean seriously, i read the statement form of that question and i just rolled my eyes…

i’ll take all advice into consideration, thanks

i say go with the question
