Hey guys,
I was just wondering what you guys were like when you got in to UVA or when you got denied. My friend and I always joke about our reactions of what would happen if we got into the school we wanted or if we got denied. Has anyone had any good/bad experiences when they've gotten their letters?

Anyways I was basically picturing myself like this:

(If you hadn't realized I probably won't respond like this... well maybe, but watch the videos, if your having a bad day I know they will cheer you up, they sure always cheer me up)

UVAorBust…I know you’re a junior and very eager to be a part of UVa; I’m just curious…what has SPECIFICALLY drawn you to UVa? In other words, why UVa over another school? Again, just curious.

well jc40, part of it is something private that happened at my house but that has had a huge impact on my life… I’m going to be writing this when i apply to UVA. But because of this issue I fight with my parents ALOT. I really love UVA because I feel like the college has an immense feeling of community. Almost everything at the school is student oriented. I feel like at UVA people actually care for eachother. I know there are always the snobs and the kids who like to bully but aside from that I feel like UVA will sort of be like a home for me… If you want me to go in more depth about the personal thing send me a private message and I’ll let you know…

Just want to want to point out UVAorBust that the admissions staff probably hears about the whole “sense of community” aspect every other essay they read. Try to be truly unique and original, thats probably what got me in. Avoid the hackneyed phrases like “Uva feels like home to me” or “Ever since I was a kid I dreamed of going to Uva.” You also might want to think about saving some of your energy on this college stuff until application time as well…

A friend of ours did not get in. This was someone with a C average, high SATs, and a respectable varsity sport in high school; the family had some ties to UVA and they had a bit of money. They are in state. I was amazed at how they used their influence to get their child admitted. The downside is that this child was totally overwhelmed academically and wound up barely passing in several required classes.

So – be careful what you ask for – you might get it.

Personally, if a college denied me, I would move on to one that did want me, and I also think that “things are not always what they seem.” Your perception of UVA may not be accurate. I suggest you find another college to flirt with, at least, so you have a place to go if you do not get into UVA.

For the record, we know two people who were admitted with sub 3.0 GPAs. So it may not be all grades or scores.
