When's a good time to submit Housing App?

I applied to Austin at the deadline as an OOS applicant to McCombs, but I have not yet received word yet on my decision. I think I have a good chance of getting in based on my SAT and extracurriculars.

Should I apply for housing now or wait until I get my decision? I’m just nervous that if I do get accepted, but at a later time, the dorms like San Jacinto , Duren will already be taken

If you want to live on campus, submit your housing application as soon as possible. The application fee is $50 nonrefundable to hold your place in line. Room assignments are made in order based on the date you apply for housing. It may already be too late to get a room in San Jacinto or Duren, two of the most popular on-campus residence halls.

@JHuff11 would you mind sharing your stats?

@JHuff1, I would strongly recommend that you submit the housing application ASAP. Unlike some of its peers, UT does not guarantee freshmen housing. Housing contracts are awarded on a first come, first served basis based on the date of the receipt of the housing application.

I applied for housing too late for my freshmen year and ended up having to room at a crappy private dorm on Guadalupe Street that didn’t offer a meal/dining plan. It was the worst part of my freshmen experience having to figure out where I would get food each and every day. Don’t delay sending in your housing app and good luck on your application to McCombs.

@MOMOF5TX 2210 SAT, 1510 (CR+M), 780 Math 2C, 720 US History. extra curriculars, essays, work experience all good (def better than average)

@fatherof2boys i just submitted the housing application, the $50 non-refundable one, and is there anything left I have to do? Do I just wait until I get the decision if I am accepted and if I am, then I do the what residence I like, etc?

@FloMoMom what residences do you recommend assuming San Jacinto/ Duren are gone? I’m a really outgoing, social guy who is passionate w/ sports. I enjoy partying as well but obviously I still have an academic priority. I feel like Jester is good, but I’m not sure West or East

@JHuff11, Jester is nice because it is a mini city. Everything you need in one place. It is probably also mostly freshmen. East houses the Univ. athletes and has been completely renovated. West gets about 4 floors renovated each summer starting from the top down. Last summer it was floors 9 - 12 I believe. So by the fall prob only the first four floors will not have been renovated.

Community baths are the way to go for boys IMO. Baths are cleaned twice a day. My S is on one of the higher floors, bathroom happens to be right across the hall. He says he has only ever seen another person in the bathroom at the same time he was in there- once or twice.

If you prefer a smaller community, take a look online at Moore Hill and Prather, Roberts and the other one. Can’t recall if a sink is in the room - another thing to think about.

I don’t know the other side of campus where the honors dorms are. Avoid the one male only dorm.

The deadline to rank your dorm choices (and select a roommate if you choose) comes about July 1.

Hi I’ve been admitted to UT but my sister hasn’t gotten an acceptance and probably won’t till late Feb. most likely. Can I request her as a dorm roommate? (I don’t really know anything about how housing works)

@Sparklekim101, yes you can. As long as both of you order your dorm prefs the same and you request each other. Again, this does not have to be in place until much later - by July 1. But one of you should already have your $50 housing application submitted - or do this asap so you are in line for your first or second choice dorms. I suggest you both send in the housing application - in the event you decide not to be room mates - but suite mates or other arrangement!

Here is a great Flow Chart of the process: http://www.utexas.edu/student/housing/pdfs/process_howto2013.pdf

Thank you so much  !

@JHuff1 congrats on your scores! I’ve also heard of in-state students with similar scores that are also waiting to hear (those that attend small, competitive private schools making auto-admit difficult), but some out of states with lower scores have been. Definitely a difficult process to wait through for the “better than average” students. Good luck to you!
