My D will not be doing any early auditions -- her fall high school musical runs through the weekend before Thanksgiving. But for what it's worth hear is her long list that we will probably pare down to 12 or so schools to apply:

U of M
CMU
NYU-T
CCM
BoCo
NYU-S
FSU
Syracuse
OCU
Otterbein
B/W
Elon
PSU
Ithaca
Emerson
Webster
U of Ok
Ball St.
Hartt
WMichU
Millikin

Ken, just so you know, your D can't apply to both NYU/Tisch and to NYU/Steinhardt. Perhaps you already know this but you can only apply to one school at NYU. I realize your D's list is still her "tentative long list" but it is hard to tell whether you know that only one of those two schools could remain on it. If you already know, nevermind :D.

No I did not know this. Maybe I am just a simple midwestern boy but the New York U thing is confusing. Maybe I should start a thread about this topic: NYU-T-CAP 21 vs. NYU S. My D is a great singer and actor, with limited dance esperience who loves MT and we are trying to figure NYU out!

Yes, this really is off topic for the CCM forum. You could start a new thread but it is preferable for you to do a SEARCH first of existing threads on the topic of NYU/Tisch vs. NYU/Steinhardt. Once you find a thread on the topic through the search, then post on it. Further, you may wish to also read up on the threads on the NYU/Tisch subforum and on the NYU/Steinhardt forum.

I will just add that while dance is a big part of the Tisch/CAP21 program, there is not a dance audition to be admitted. They have placement and so those with less dance background are placed accordingly (for each year/grade alone, there are four levels offered for ballet, four for jazz, and four for tap). Remember, a MT performer needs to be able to sing, dance and act. So, while one has strengths prior to college, it is good to find a college program where the student can not only build upon their strengths but be challenged to work on their weaker areas. So, in your D's case, seeking a school that has a weak dance program is not necessarily in her best training interests.

Anyway, both Tisch and Steinhardt have many threads already and so you should do a search. Also, you ought to read the threads that have been filed under the NYU/Tisch and NYU/Steinhardt sub forums. Besides those two sub forums which discuss each program and even have a thread or two comparing them, there is a brief synopsis of these two NYU options in our FAQ section here: http://www.geocities.com/musicaltheatercolleges/steinhardttisch.html

I'll probably audition either in the middle of January or in Febuary for CCM!!! I'm only 4 hours so away....so i'm auditioning in person. But i'd be dead terrified to audition for early decision lol. I have a few up-tempo songs lined up, i'm still waiting for something better to come along though. I'm almost done picking my ballad though. Here are the schools i'm applying to as of right now...

CCM
Syracuse
Roosevelt University Chicago College of the Performing Arts
Ithaca
Emerson

These are my top schools...I have 1-2 backups just in case. And I might audition at a few other schools, not sure yet. Anyways look forward to meeting all you incredible people at auditions!!

Soozie --

Thanks for the pointers...I'll check them out.

Ken

I'm auditioning at the Chicago Unifieds. I live about 45 minutes from the city, so it's the best option for me as the bulk of my other schools don't participate in the unifieds.

And I'm getting nervous because I'm not dead set on any songs yet at this point. I'm just waiting for one to smack me right in the face, but so far that isn't happening.

I know what you mean lol. Maybe i'll run into you in Chicago at unifieds!

As a parent, I only heard about the dance audition for CCM (this was at the Unified. I heard it was fun, and you're taught a sequence of choreography. Last year it was from "Urinetown". I'm sure you could search the threads for this info, as I remember it was discussed. I think kaylagurl gave a nice breakdown of different auditions at unifieds.
Good luck!

hello,

I will be applying early as well to CCM and BOCO, as a transfer, hopefully i can start as a sophmore at one of them, but i doubt it. (I know one person who did) I don't even know if I will attend if i get into one of them, and I haven't even started looking for audition material. So, basically there is no hope. Good luck to all of you, I just know after last year's round of rejections, two won't seem so bad.

You're only auditioning at CCM and BoCo? Why not throw in a third mildly "safe" school? Those are two of the hardest schools to get in to!

ColegePLEASE:

If you are really really wanting to get into a BFA program, you must hedge your bets. Your plan of action is very very chancy even for the most talented kid on the planet. If you were even a freshman applicant, two BFA programs is not enough. As a transfer, the odds are even tougher. Add to that the fact that you were not successful on the first go around last year with admissions. With training, you certainly have a chance on round two and there are many who who were not successful the first time but are on the second year's try. Several have posted here of such success, so there IS hope for attending A college that offers MT.

But the likelihood of a successful outcome with just TWO BFA programs, and in fact, two of the top programs in the field,

I'm probably auditioning in January. I have too many productions in December!

I plan on auditioning February 23rd. I want CCM to be my last audition of the season. Just so I have as much prep time for this school because it's my number 1 choice.

in response to collegePLEASE:

I completely agree with soozievt's post about the chances you are taking to only audition for CCM and BoCo. However, I was accepted into CCM as a transfer this past year and only auditioned for CCM, so it IS possible. I did have 2 other auditions lined up as "safety" options just in case CCM did not work out and cancelled them once CCM pulled through. CCM is really quick on letting you know also (I heard in 3 days) so you might want to take that route. If you are SET on CCM, give your all into that audition and work hard for what you want! Best wishes!

I changed my dates lol. I'm going on either Jan 12th or 26th!!!

it's true, you can only apply to one undergrad school within NYU. if you apply to tisch, you will be put into a studio within the tisch school. at your audition you can say what your preference is in terms of what studio you want to be in, but you won't necessarily get your first choice. it is, however, possible to transfer studios after your sophomore year.) CAP21, the musical theatre studio, is fairly small, so not every musical theatre applicant gets put in it. some get put in acting studios, but they still take voice and dance classes. students can still audition for NYU musicals even if they're in an acting studio instead of CAP21.

here's some basic info about auditioning: http://undergraduate.tisch.nyu.edu/page/audition.html good luck to you and your daughter!

mike:

i'm probably gonna audition in november. i'm planning to apply early decision to either tisch or mt. holyoke, and i'm really sitting on the fence about which one i prefer. (they're completely different schools.) my worry about tisch is that ppl will be too competitive. i understand that theatre is a very competitive world, but you can be competitive while still being friendly and helping your peers out. not everything has to be about cut-throat competition. anyone have any advice on this???

Tamar,

Thanks for this info. We've slowly started figuring out the NYU maze. Of all the MT BFA programs it is the most obtuse both in terms of the program and the application/audition process. But I guess that seems fitting.

Thanks again for you help.

Ken

Please move this to the NYU thread.
