Where andHOW can I get the Perkins Loan?

Any website? I found one, but it didnt say how I can apply for it.

The Perkins Loan is one of the federally funded forms of financial aid. It is typically for low income families…and it has limited funds, meaning that each school receives a pool of money and decides how to award it. It is usually awarded on a first come/first served basis.

You get the Perkins (if awarded it) as part of your financial aid package based on the FAFSA. If you are starting college in fall 2010, you can complete the 2010-2011 FAFSA beginning on Jan 1, 2010 when it becomes available for filing. You should complete and submit this as soon as you can. Submit it to the colleges and they will award your federally funded aid based on the FAFSA. Check each school website to find out when your awards will be received…and for the DEADLINES. BUT remember that the Perkins is limited funds…first come/first served so apply early.

You will fill out that FAFSA in January using the BEST POSSIBLE estimates for the 2009 tax year. Submit it to the schools indicating “will file” as your status. As soon as possible after Feb 1, complete your taxes and your parents need to complete theirs. Go back into the FAFSA website and amend that FAFSA to reflect the actual numbers on your parents’ and your tax returns. Change the status to “taxes completed” and resubmit.

The Perkins loan is awarded by a school as part of a financial aid package. You cannot go and apply for it. When you complete FAFSA the school will consider you for Perkins loans if they have any and if you meet their criteria. It is not like the Stafford where everyone is eligible. It is one of the more difficult loans to be awarded as it is a campus based (meaning the school sets their own criteria for how to award it) federal loan that has *very *limited funding. Many schools have no Perkins funds at all. Those that do usually award it to the neediest of their students but even then they run out of Perkins funds before they can award it to all eligible students.
