Where are all the nontraditional students?

Lawlking, that’s the part I don’t understand. What’s the point of the TAG then?

Yeah that is weird. UCSB does TAG. You never got an acceptance letter? I guess it can’t be bad news because you never got a denial letter either I’m assuming. Maybe you should call the admissions office.

26 here. i applied to uci, ucla and then threw in davis and sd because of the fee waiver. i heard back from irvine yesterday. now im just waiting on la

@norcaltransfer77 I am in the same nervous wreck boat with you! I also applied out of state to Northern Arizona, but I’ll probably stick around here just because the financial aid is so much better, and even though I’m not necessarily a fan of the state, it’s hard to beat the caliber of education offered at the UCs without going private.

Also, TAG is super confusing.

Well, you are automatically accepted when you do meet the requirements. Then there are people who have the same GPA as you but didn’t TAG and they get rejected.

TAG is a contract–that if fulfilled thoroughly–will guarantee your acceptance.

Here is a scenario for example:
Person A has 3.5 GPA and TAGGED to UCSB, he/she gets accepted as long as they fulfill their end of the deal.
Person B has 3.5 GPA and did not TAG to UCSB, he/she is not guranteed acceptance and can get rejected.

ah, is see. Yeah when i got the letter it said, we have received your TAG and it has been processed. I am really hoping to get into UCLA. The Blue and Gold program for the UC system is what I’m counting on. I would love to go somewhere like NYU or BU or Vandy. Another worry is the major difference in work level and difficulty.

All the UC’s, except Merced and Berkeley(They use semester), uses quarter system. That means classes are only 10-weeks long, way shorter than a semester which is roughly 16-20 weeks long.

As long as you stay on task then it should be fine.

I’m a bit worried about the difference in difficulty as well! It’s fairly easy to do really well in a CCC, but I worry about transferring and just not being good enough. I dunno, I don’t think I’ve ever needed wine more than I will for the next month so I can calm the eff down.

@colorsinthestars, made me laugh, I hear you on that! More vino please! haha. I like this thread, I was getting really intimidated by the 4.9 super out of this world SAT score captain and president of everything worried about getting into a school that I could only dream of. Good for them, but man, makes me really think twice about how I am gonna be able to handle a UC. Thanks everyone here for this thread.

Navymike, you heard from UCI? Accepted? if so congrats! I keep hearing rumors of a Friday the 9th release date. Merced’s portal says the site is going to be down this friday until saturday, I was thinking that maybe they will post then?

@norcaltransfer77. I can assure you not everyone at UC’s act elitist(But of course you do have handful that do act like this in every school). People there are friendly because, well, they are people like everyone else; so if you need help they are more willing to help! But I’m not so sure about Berkeley, I heard they are very competitive over there.

Also, how cool is having a professor that won the Nobel Prize? Every UC, except Merced, has at least 1 Nobel Laureate Professor.

I am 31 and applied to UCSB, UCI, UCR, UCB and UCSD.

@norcaltransfer77 those kids that are president of this and treasurer of that, blah blah blah are great and all, but one thing that we have that they don’t is our age – nontraditional students are pretty highly regarded just because we have a higher maturity level and are more likely to do well. I hear some schools are actively seeking out non-traditional students as well.

^^ColorsInTheStars. California passed Proposition 209 in 1996 that made Affirmative Action illegal, and using Age, Gender, Sexual Orientation, and etc for admissions illegal.

So, its all about the GPA!!

Guess I heard wrong!

I think I may be the most non-traditional student to post so far. I will be 59 this July. I first went to cc in 1973, before most of you were born! I explored my interests for a while, then left cc for a great business opportunity. Got married, had two daughters, as was a stay at home Mom pretty much for 20 years. I did a TAG to UC Davis for fall 2012 and my TAG was accepted. I only have to finish stats with a C and I am in. All IGETC is done, all pre reqs done. I have a 3.9 at my current cc but Davis says its 3.47 since it is cumulative from over 25 years of cc grades (yes, those grades stay with you forever!).

I will major in Anthropology and minor in Music. I plan to teach or substitute teach in my community or we’ll see what the future brings. My husband is retiring and I don’t want a full blown career at this point. I am so fulfilled to know I will finally finish my bachelor degree. My older daughter graduated from college already and my younger daughter will graduate from UCLA this June. I will be next! My cc counselors and the UC Davis rep have been extremely encouraging and confirm that they do value students like me.

@Inquiringmind2

Welcome to the Thread! And congratulations on your husbands retirement. I’m ready to do that as well.

I just started back up with school, I’m 23. So when I do transfer I’ll be 25. Dropped out of HS middle of junior year. Got my GED joined the military now that I’m out time to hit the books.

@Inquiringmind2

Your story is incredibly inspiring!

My mother, who married my father at the age of 16 (he was 28, it was an arranged marriage), came to the US with very little education. She just recently graduated from Cal Poly Pomona after going to CC. She chose CPP because she lives in the area and still had my younger brother (11 at the time) to look after.

Anyway, I think it’s an incredible achievement to do this sort of thing once you’re past a certain age, and I wish you the best of luck :)

@UCBhopeful16

That’s great! I dropped out softmore year…don’t give up!

@asphyxiac

I’m from Pomona, did she go to Mt. Sac? I did a semester there when I was 17.

@Lookin4ward

Good luck! Did you try to TAG to any of those places?
