Where are the best locations to study at Cal?

i.e.

Dorms? Libraries? Study rooms in the units?

Please share your opinions with a soon to be Cal student. =)

depends on what dorm you’re in and what kind of student you are. I know some people who were at the far end of the hall and studied in their room all the time. Personally, I can study science/math with slight distractions but have trouble reading with any distractions so I would do physics/math in my room or at my hall lounge, while I would go to main stacks to read for my humanities classes. they have tutoring for physics/chem/math/english in the ASC (bottom part of each of the units and a special building in unit 4 / ckc) which I highly recommend taking advantage of.

as for libraries, a lot of it varies by personal taste and what time you study. main stacks is open latest, but not everyone likes studying there. I recommend trying each throughout the year and seeing what works best for you.

it depends on the person. i personally can do all of my studying in my room even with minor distractions. but i’ve got a friend who under no circumstances can study in her room and must go to the library to study.

If you’re like me and you can’t handle even minor distractions, the library is probably your best bet. There are people who talk though, which is annoying. Just try to sit where people aren’t sitting with their friend.

main stax.

My favorite place to study is the philosophical library. It is in Moses and has an old school library vibe. Very quiet place too.

My favorite place to study is the East Asian library. Very few students go all the down to the bottom floor (the basement?)… so it’s perfect if you’re the type of person who needs peace and quiet when studying. The Morrison library (in Doe) is also one of my favorites.

I’m one of those people who can never study in a very cramped space-- like a dorm. I lived in a triple my freshman year so there wasn’t a lot of room to spread out my study materials.

I don’t study. But if I did, it would be in bed. Then I fall asleep and hope the next day that my brain magically absorbed the material.

I like the north reading room in Doe library. I think the north is the one with the big painting. Noise doesnt really echo like in the south reading room.

Another option is Dwinelle after 8PM, but sometimes the janitors kick you out at 11PM

Or if one of your buddies does research, you can get exclusive access to buildings like Leconte where no one else can get to

But, of all the places, I think a single room is best with no people around. Most people learn new material better with no people around , but they perform better on material they know well with people around (source: Social Psychology textbook by Keltner). So, I studied alone and then you take tests with people around when you know the material well. If you don’t know the material well… then you will perform worse then if you take the test alone on average. Of course, you could be an outlier, and this does not apply to you.

Valley life science building

to all the ppl who study in libraries: WHERE WERE YOU LAST SEMESTER???

cuz i sure could’ve used a roommate who actually spent time studying OUTSIDE of our dorm room, instead of making it feel like a morgue EVERY waking minute that she wasn’t in her classes. i would’ve died if for just one day she had gone to the library to study… :|

good to know you guys are out there, though!

that said: the architecture library has a sitting area that’s pretty cool… open till 8 or 9, i think. cool, distracting magazines laying around, too!

^^I know what you mean =/ My roommate always wanted it quite like 24/7 to study in the room. When I wanted it quite i went somewhere else, but then again I can’t study WITHOUT music so noise was never an issue for me. I know we have to respect each other and our study habits, but it sure ****ed me when he asked me all the time to leave my room when a floor mate entered the room for a candid conversation while waiting for the elevator. Quite people are boring =)

Chemistry library or VLSB.

VLSB or the Stacks.

I’ve tried to study on the upper floors of Moffit before, but there was some weird persistent air condition rumble/vibration that was really annoying.

Main stacks. total silence underground. you will get so much done.

The Main Stacks are pindrop-quiet, so if you’re the type that needs some ambient noise when you’re studying, you might have trouble staying awake in there.
