I love to run at night (for some reason, running during the day isn't the same to me), and I hope I don't have to stop this habit of mine when I transfer down to Berkeley. I was wondering if you guys could let me know which areas around Berkeley are sketchy. What places should I avoid when running?

Thank you. =)

I ran at night, too. Sometimes up to 8 miles (11pm-12am). My advice: stay east of Telegraph Ave.

Thanks much, Ektaylor! :)

north side is pretty safe…everything else is hit or miss. the town is a piece of s h i t.

I have to walk back from RSF every night on Telegraph to get to my apartment now… just, stay away from there. Nothing bad has happened yet [knock on wood] but chyea. I’d say the campus is generally safe at night too.

When I was up there for a brief campus visit I was staying at the Double Tree Suites by the marina. About two miles from the campus. There’s a trail that runs along the water for a few miles, I ran it each night back and forth a few times and felt fine about it. I got hassled at one point by a bum while I was taking a quick breath but the second I got a little threatening with him he took off. Just avoid getting too close to the juice place or whatever the hell it is, that’s the only place I saw anyone at night and that’s where he came running up to me. The trail itself was nice and quiet.

I’m going to be living in North Oakland/Temescal, so I’ll probably just join the on campus gmy. Sucks because I do like running outside better, but oh well.

I’ve had to walk down telegraph or durant after a 10 pm midterm more than once. It was pretty not pleasant.

Couldn’t agree more with anon

@abutler5: If you’re in North Oakland, depending on where, you might be good. Just use common sense, walk the route during the day and look around. If you see bars on the windows, I’d probably do my running at the gym. Hah. I’ve done business in Oakland before though, some parts of North Oakland are cool, and East Oakland is pretty much ok from what I’ve seen.

lmao @ if you see bars

I lived in Rockridge (essentially North Oakland). It’s probably the wealthiest part of Oakland sans Claremont.

Southside of campus, especially along Bancroft, is the sketchiest area. Southside sees a lot more crime that Northside.

i’ve never found telegraph to be sketchy even when walking back at 3 or 4am from a party or the library. Just don’t get too close to MLK and you should be fine.

Northside has had a lot of crime lately. I’m always on my guard at night, but I’ve been out pretty late all over Berkeley and have never had a problem.

Agree with the last 2 posters. You might see some sketchy people, but there isn’t actually much to worry about. I lived on Telegraph for 2 years and walked around past 10pm nearly every day. My friend (a girl) walked from Unit 3 to Unit 1 at around midnight or later every single day and never ran into any trouble.

And of course Southside is going to be more “sketchy” and look worse on statistics than North side. Northside is all residential while southside is much more commercial and has many more people living in high rise buildings like the units. Just trust the people who actually lived in Southside.

But for running at night, staying on campus is probably best.

How do people that live in Clark Kerr deal with this? I’m going to be a freshman next year and I’m not sure if I feel comfortable walking all the way back to Clark Kerr from campus/a Unit late at night. I guess there’s always BearWalk.

berk’s just not a all out safe place in general. you just gotta be careful. i mean hell if you ever read those criminal reports posted in the units, you’ll see that **** happens at any time of the day…
