The University of California Police Department (UCPD) has arrested a 2nd year student for a series of laptop thefts that have occurred in Moffit and Doe Libraries between the period of March 20th through April 27th. UCPD acted on a search warrant of the suspect’s residence and recovered 8 laptops associated with 8 separate theft cases.

The suspect in custody is:

KIM, Kuk, an Asian male, 20 years of age, 5’09” in height, 175 lbs., with black hair and brown eyes.

For more information regarding Campus Safety Guidelines and specifically how to protect your laptop please visit UCPD’s website at:
"

bet you he got expelled

that website can be pretty entertaining (and scary). I remember seeing something about a lady rapist on there last fall. :D

The California handsaw massacre
instead of taking faces, he takes their bikes. hahah

We’re moving to the part of Oakland around the Children’s Hospital. So, not Rockridge, but not too far from the really nice areas either.

I guess I’ll just jog towards Rockridge and then back, haha.

To be honest, almost every part of Berkeley is “sketchy” at night. The point: don’t run at night. Go to bed early, do your running in the early morning.

Or, sprint on a bicycle down major streets at night. They’re more likely to be well-lighted, and you’re much less likely to be attacked.

If you really insist on running at night, northside would be it. However, just keep in mind that even northside is not safe. Berkeley is just sketchy, period.

You can get around if you need to, but you should never be outside unnecessarily during the night.

@excelblue,

That’s some really ****ty advice. OP, don’t listen to him/her.

Care to elaborate why?

The point is that even if nothing has happened to you, this doesn’t mean that nothing will happen to you. The danger is still there – you’ve just been lucky.

Yes, Rockridge is a nice area, but it’s not Berkeley. At the same, it’s important to remember that thugs do often go to nice areas near their hood in order to rob those who potentially have more money than others in their area.

Berkeley, and most of the surrounding area, is not just some suburb that is free of influence from “inner-city” thugs. It’s all easily reachable by a short walk or bike. The crime rates speak for themselves.

Lol, spoken like a true child of suburbia. Rockridge may not be in Berkeley proper, but Claremont and Elmwood are. Yes, there was a mugging in my area at 10pm last November, but that did not stop me from running at night. To let one rogue robbery (or hearsay) limit your schedule is silly. Would I walk home drunk from the Albatross to my place in Rockridge? No–but, I would from the Graduate or some other bar down College. Common sense is key.

While I’d agree that common sense is the key, what I’m saying is that it’s contrary to common sense to be scheduling runs at night.

I just pulled up the Oakland crime map and looked within the parts within a few blocks of Rockridge BART. There were four violent crime (assults, etc.) cases within the past month. That’s approximately one victim per week, or more than 50 victims per year. There’s a good chance that something will eventually happen to you. If you’re smart about it, you might end up getting away with $20 less. Yet, it’s not a situation you’d want to be in.

Hence, why I said it’s OK to be out at night if it’s necessary – having to get home from a bar counts as “necessary.” Doing a run when you could have done it in the better-lighted hours of early morning is not.

Enjoy your walled-in life.

At home I do 11 pm, 12 am runs all the time. At berkeley I don’t. It’s just not worth it (not like I have much to steal when i go on a run, but i rather like the feeling of not getting assaulted by a stranger). Be smart about stuff and be smart about your surroundings. There’s really no specific sketchy areas in Berkeley…just look at the neighboring cities and you’ll know why.

You guys need to run faster.

preferably faster than a hunting pack of miscreants, ideally faster than a bullet

Since Berkeley and Oakland citizens routinely shoot people for running through their neighborhood.

What I like to do is imagine that if I get robbed/held up, I’d be like FINE **** YOU MAN. THIS IS ALL I GOT LEFT IN THE WORLD. And as I chuck the bill at him, I break his arm and fly away.
While they may not routinely shoot you, you have to watch out for people who routinely walk around with hand saws. Those are the people with whom you don’t want to mess.

@Ektaylor

hahahahaha. but no. I live in Berkeley (sure in the north, which is considered wealthier) and I went to Berkeley High School. I ran through Berkeley neighborhoods past MLK (OMG!) all the time. I would run on Telegraph too. Never got bothered by anyone, mostly because it was daytime. Now for Oakland, unless you’re going to east Oakland, the likelihood of you being bothered let alone harmed in the daytime is pretty small.

So here’s your lessons: Don’t run at night unless you head east and/or north. Don’t run in east Oakland, ever. You probably won’t run to Oakland from UC Berkeley anyways…And finally, don’t look shady and don’t look like you want to get robbed (hammered, causing a raucous, etc). Most of these apply to night, but I’m not saying stuff can’t happen because it does. Just try to reduce the chances.

P.S. It helps if you have street cred.

I’ve walked around Berkeley at 3 AM or so in the morning before, but the thing was I was always with a group of other people and typically there was at least one guy in the group. Also, the big lit up streets on southside and in downtown Berkeley are fairly safe.
