Hi kaybee3

If cost is a consideration, remember that NYU has some of the most expensive study abroad programs on planet earth. (Their Florence program appeared in a Huffington Post article called “Decadent Study Abroad” - something like that.):

While I can’t tell you which schools have the best programs, I can say that if cost is a factor, don’t rule out State schools from your home state. As a resident of your home state you’d be eligible for the program at in-state tution rates, which can make a real difference cost-wise.

There are so many programs to choose from, so you’ll have to dig up info and see what’s best for you. Keep in mind, though, that a lot of US universities send their students to the same host universities abroad - and while the host university may charge X amount of dollars, you may end up paying two or three, or even more times the amount for the program - it all depends on how each university prices their programs.

To me, it seems like a better deal to go for a program that costs $5,000 (and have to pay the entire $5,000), than to do a program that costs $18,000 and have to rely on financial aid - especially if $5,000 is in the form of a student loan… (I’m making up the numbers, but I have looked into this and I know that real differences exist.)

Just to give you an example, the University of Salamnca, in Spain (I studied there) has a program for international students - you can go there on your own. But a lot of US universities use the university (and exactly that program) as their host school and their study abroad program. No matter what US university you go through, you’ll pay more than if you registered directly with the Univesity of Salamanca. And again, how much you pay will depend on where you buy the program - because that’s what you’re doing when you choose a study abroad program - you’re buying something.

Anyway, I hope I maybe, kinda, somewhat, sorta helped you out a bit!

Wherever you go, have a great time and make the most out of it!

So, you’re saying getting financial aid for study abroad programs at NYU is hard? I already have a good financial aid package. Won’t that aid travel with me?

And thanks for all the information! Means a lot. :)

Hi kaybee3,
Sorry for the late reply. I am on collegeconfidential only sporadically…

Financial aid is an involved topic I think - but it will travel will you if you (for example) were an NYU student and participated in an NYU program. I came across an article a couple of years ago which listed the top 10 exepensive/“decadent” study abroad programs - and two of the programs were from NYU

<a href=“Here's 10 Decadent Study Abroad Programs That Make College Even More Expensive”>Here's 10 Decadent Study Abroad Programs That Make College Even More Expensive;

In any case, you’re financial aid will travel with you - but if the cost of the program is really, really high, then you are going to need more financial aid - and that often means a larger student loan (if you’re not on a full scholarship).

One of the programs was $35,691 (NYU in Florence). Don’t know if that was for a semester or year, but I am sure it comes with all the bells and whistles.

Now, I don’t know how much of that $35,691 is for tuition but if you look at
http://www.budgetstudyabroad.com/semester-in-florence-650-euros-universita-degli-studi-di-firenze/

you see that the tuition for a semester at the University of Florence is 650 euros.

(I understand that you have to add housing, food, etc., but it gives you an idea of how different schools charge different fees for study abroad.)

Hope this helps somewhat!

Kaybee,
