Where are the teaching jobs?

Can anyone comment on the job market for high school math and science teachers, or special education teachers? I keep hearing that these there are a shortage of these positions, but is that also a myth?

^ It really depends on the state that you teach in. Within the sciences, physics is in greater demand than biology. I am not sure about the other two but technology teachers are in need.

Actually, my son is currently a health/p.e. teacher and he is thankful to be employed by a school district in Nevada. He did graduate from a PA school and has certification here. He would like to put down some roots on the eastern side of the country, so he checks the education job banks regularly. A friend’s DD is teaching math on a New Mexico reservation because that was her only option after graduating from Muhlenberg last spring. Seems like even if you are willing to relocate nearly anywhere, it might not work out.

I can’t help wondering what is happening to all these education graduates every spring with nowhere to go.

My kid graduated with a math ed. degree three years ago, and worked as a sub for two years due to no job openings. She applied for over 100 positions for this school year (WI, lots of teachers retiring thanks to the governor). There were 50-100 applicants for each position.

She ended up this year at a new private school that she loves, but it doesn’t provide health insurances. So, back to filling out applications again…

I’m a 32 year veteran teacher in California. None of us can afford to retire until we are at least 60, you take a big hit if you retire earlier. For me, at 60, I will have taught 38 years. Teaching is not as rewarding as it used to be…our district rolled backed our salaries, despite the fact we consistently raised test scores for the past 10 years, and despite the fact that THEY keep raising class size and LOWERING our salaries. Remember, 8% of your salary goes into the retirement system.

a bunch of my friends have been hired in northern VA in the last couple years…
