Where are there cross-over programs between MT and VP?

I am a high school junior applying for college this fall, and had originally decided on going into Vocal Performance. Recently, I realized that I would love to be doing both MT and VP (I’m predominately a vocalist) but don’t know what places have good bridges between the two. I don’t want to be taught by graduate students, and I would love to be majoring in voice while still being able to do lots of MT. What schools are there really good cross over programs? What are the programs? Is there an application process for it or is it for anyone in the Music/Theatre Arts department? Any information on the mixture of VP and MT would be highly appreciated! Thank you

I think ASU has one of the best cross over programs in the country. http://music.asu.edu/lot/

They offer a VP program within the Herberger SOM that will earn you a BM in Musical Theater Performance… If your grades and test scores are good you can also avail yourself of the ASU Barrett honors program simultaneously.

Oklahoma City University has a reputable program that mixes MT and VP. I know one girl who just finished her Jr year there and likes it a lot. And, of course, both Kristin Chenoweth and Kelli O’Hara went there.

And to answer a few of your other questions:

VP & MT are in most cases totally separate at the college level. It was hard for me to believe but it is. However a few schools mix it. So look on school websites and/or call schools and just ask if they mix. The mixed programs make it clear generally. If you can’t find how they mix or if they mix, the answer is most likely they don’t.

My D auditioned for both. The process is similar except that more VP programs require pre-screenings - a few MT do too. Also, and most annoyingly, VP often requires you travel to the school to audition. For MT, you can do unified audition. My daughter did Chicago and received 2 acceptances with never traveling to the schools.

For music, MT programs of course want MT songs. VP programs for undergrad are typically looking for art songs in various languages. You will need to check the schools’ websites. The MT/VP programs maybe want both? A good teacher will be able to help you pick appropriate audition music. AND that is what you should be doing this summer. Picking your repertoire. If you do both VP/MT, it can be a lot of songs to get performance ready.

My D was dead set on MT (since that is what she did in high school) even though when she sang it seemed obvious to me she should go the VP route. I could only get her to audition for VP at schools that did MT. The audition process made her realize that maybe VP was the direction to go based on responses. She was accepted to both but there was more enthusiasm for VP and she started to take a hard look at the MT competition and the fact that she really wasn’t a amazing belter nor outstanding dancer (yes, you will need to dance - or at least “move” - and definitely act at MT auditions - meaning more to prepare).

So…trying for both VP and MT and mixed programs is not a bad idea at this point. As you research schools, repertoire and requirements, do pre-screening and finally audition (& see the competition) you will inevitably, sooner or later, end up in the right place.

I hope this helps!!

NYU Steinhardt has a program that mixes both, the Bachelor of Music program in Vocal Performance with a specialization in Music Theatre.http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/music/theatre/programs/undergraduate

My d is currently double majoring in VP and MT at Oklahoma City U and absolutely loves it, so I must admit to a bias toward that program. Other programs that I’ve heard allow flexibility with VP and MT are NYU Steinhardt, James Madison U in Va, Ithaca , and more recently Plymouth State And many ( most) programs really aren’t flexible, as an earlier postersaid, it’s important to do your research.
