Where are you applying?

This is what I’ve got so far. I don’t think I will apply to any other schools if I get good enough financial aid from Yale if I’m accepted. (But the chances of that… :frowning: cry) I’m also still trying to cut down the list and have still got to research the colleges more thoroughly. Question marks indicate my level of indecision.

Early Action
Yale

Regular Decision
Princeton
Harvard
Stanford??
MIT??
Columbia??
Duke??
Emory
Brown
UCLA
UC Berkeley
UChicago???
UPENN??
Cornell???
Northwestern???

At the moment all I’m sure about is…

Columbia (possibly ED… must discuss with parents)
Carnegie Mellon
Macaulay Honors College at CUNY
St. Johns University (6 year PharmD)
SUNY Stony Brook

Possibles and things I need to weed out: (most are high reaches)
BU, BC, Cornell, MIT, Caltech, UPenn, UPitt, Penn State, JHU, NYU, UMich

Early Decision:
Dartmouth

Regular Decision:
Cornell (first choice if not Dartmouth, the rest are equals)
Hamilton
Colgate
Washington & Lee
Richmond
Virginia
William & Mary
Syracuse
Penn State

Here’s my list. I won’t have my SAT II’s done by the early decision deadline, so I’m applying RD to all schools.

Cornell
Princeton
MIT (athletic recruit)
Duke
UT Austin

I was going to apply to Harvard, but I didn’t like the school when I visited. Honestly, I find it perplexing how anyone could apply to both MIT and Harvard. The two are black and white compared to one another. But that’s just me.

In what ways? Lots of people like both pretty strongly.

^Me  .

Harvard felt like a school of deeply-rooted and established tradition, while MIT felt futuristic and forward-looking. And of course, their opposite areas of academic renown.

^This doesn’t matter for every major.

As far as being “deeply rooted,” everything in America is fairly young.

I wouldn’t call them opposite. They both have strong engineering programs (though MIT’s is better), science programs (though Harvard’s might be a bit better), and social science programs. The only main difference is that Harvard is better for most humanities subjects.

I had that concept of MIT until I visited. :)

This is true, but Harvard does have a ~220 year head start over MIT.

I’m aware. I just can’t help but perceive MIT as a technological mecca and Harvard as a liberal arts and social science hub.

Funny, that’s the perception I had of MIT when I came away from it :)

^If you’re a maybe-biology major, which school would you pick?

I didn’t realize that we were referring to perception.

Really? I thought I made it clear:

^^I’d choose MIT, but only because of my natural aversion to Harvard. As a neutral applicant, I imagine either of the two would provide an excellent biology education.

The academics would be basically the same, so I would go with Harvard partly for financial reasons and that I simply got a better feel there.

I understood that what you wrote was your perception, but I thought that you meant that you didn’t see how others could perceive it differently. I proposed the reality as a potential indicator of others’ perceptions. In hindset, I guess that post #73 doesn’t make much sense, though.

I would also pick Harvard because if you are not sure re biology you may well change your mind about your major, and humanities are better at Harvard. Having said that, I am one of those who is applying to both and loves both (though prefer Harvard).

Interesting :]
