Where can DS and I learn the big rules of student loans fast?

DH and I funded DS's undergraduate tuition in full from our savings but he's on his own for the MBA program to which he was admitted this week. How can we quickly bring ourselves up to speed on all the loan options, the pros and cons of private vs public, repayment rules, etc? Also, is there a favorite thread here that someone can post? Thanks, all.

Worrywart…our son could have funded most of his grad school costs with Stafford loans. I don’t recall the limit but it’s much higher than for undergrads. Fortunately our son also got some decent scholarships for grad school so he didn’t need to take the maximum loan. I would start with the Stafford loans. Your grad school son will need to complete the FAFSA (as an independent student) and submit to his grad school.

Thanks very much. I’ll suggest he check into Stafford loans and FAFSA deadlines.

start here…

Now that your son is a grad student he can borrow 20.5k a year through the stafford loan program. Starting next year (2012) all grad school stafford loans will be unsubsidized (this means intersts accrues as soon as the $ is disbursed)

Based on his credit worthiness, he can now borrow the entire cost of his attendance as a gradplus loan
