I'm in a last minute panic on finding on par and safety private schools to apply to. My GPA is 3.41, and I have had a total of 7 AP classes throughout my entire time in high school. MY ACT score was 28. I have taken the SAT II Math IIC and got 660, and I got 650 on the US History one. My extracurricular activities are pretty descent. I know I haven't done that great academically, so can you guys suggest any good schools (hopefully bio or pre-med) for me that I will have a descent chance of getting into? I'm unfamiliar with that many private schools. Thanks.

You have a decent chance getting into many schools. However, there are other factors to consider.

What is your budget?

What kind of school do you want?

What state are you in?

I would suggest Wake Forest University and also maybe Loyola University- New Orleans. You could definitely get into Drexel University and of course Albright College.

Thank you for taking the time to help.
- I don’t really have a budget. I would definitely prefer a lower cost, but I will look into that after getting accepted. I’m mainly concerned about getting into college right now, so I’m not really worried about finance.
- I’m looking into pre-med, biology, and liberal arts majors. I would prefer a college with an urban or suburban environment such as UCLA or UCI (one with city-life). Also, I would prefer in-state, but out-of-state is acceptable also.
- I live in Southern California right outside LA.

You have many good options but it won’t do you any good if you get accepted to a private school, either in-state or OOS if you can not afford to attend. Some of your match and safety schools may be your mid and lower tier UC’s. Match private schools in CA that meet your criteria might be USanDiego, Santa Clara and U of the Pacific, with Saint Mary’s of Moraga as a safety private school (suburban but near Walnut Creek and BART stations into S.F.).

Tufts and Holy Cross have good pre-med.

You have well above average stats and can easily get into many colleges.

Why do you specify private and then list UCs as your ideals?

Don’t apply without thinking through finances, lots of kids waste lots of time doing that. There are private colleges that meet 100% of need that are the best choices for the low and middle income. Others offer good merit aid which is important if your parents can’t meet their EFC. Still others offer most little of any kind of aid.

Before applying figure out what you’re looking for aid wise unless your family can pay the $35-$55K private colleges cost, and apply accordingly. Those that don’t often end up in a lot of debt.

Hotstreek, the time to think about the cost & financial aid is now, sit down with your parent(s) and have an honest discussion! Have you calculated your EFC with your parents or looked into it on the “Fin Aid” Website or on the College Board website? I think you are drinking the Financial Aid Kool Aid, unless you are not eligible for Financial Aid & will be paying full freight!

*Don’t apply without thinking through finances, lots of kids waste lots of time doing that. *

VERY TRUE!!

Applying to colleges takes a lot of time, energy, and money. WHY waste time on schools without considering finances??? It’s not like you have an unlimited number of schools that you can apply to.

What a disappointment it would be to learn (too late) in the spring that if you had applied to School X instead of School Y, you would have had an affordable school to choose.

You need to ask your parents NOW how much they will pay each year for college.
