Hi! I was wondering if there were any universities that allow Musical theatre and Buisness or communication double majors. This would be a huge help to me, Thanks!

You may be in ‘cross colleges’ with the MT in either the College of Arts and sciences or college of fine Arts (BA or BFA), and the business school in the college of business (BS). The degrees may have very different requirements and may require more credits.

In my university, a million years ago, communications would have been in school of A&S (B.A), business in the college of business (BS) and theater in Fine Arts (BFA). You would have had to meet the requirements of each college you wanted a degree from, and rather than 124 credits, you would have needed 150.

We have a friend getting a BFA in MT and a BS in International Business from Western Kentucky University but it will take an extra semester to fulfill all of the degree requirements for both majors. I assume that would be the case at many schools. Northwestern is one that comes to mind that allows double majors. And I believe Ball State does as well.

James Madison allows double majors with Musical Theatre, but the BA in Musical Theatre and BBA in Business would be a dual degree. It would be very difficult (if not impossible to complete in 4 years). A double major in Musical Theatre and Communication Studies or School of Media Arts and Design would be more manageable because both are BA degrees. The minor in Communications would be VERY doable, and can include an internship.

Bowling Green State University in Ohio has a BA in Communication specializing in Musical theatre

Check into Ohio Northern University

@vnnstar I haven’t considered northwestern- THANK YOU

Agree on Ohio Northern. When we were there their directorr specifically mentioned that several of their MTs doubled in Communications. Don’t know about Business, but they are very open to double majors. One of my daughter’s HS teachers was an MT/English major from ONU.

Many students at Northwestern complete the MT Certificate and a second major in 4 years, so if you have very strong academic stats it’s definitely worth looking in to.

@momcares I am actually already in their database- I took their academic talent search in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade and scored in the top 5% so I’ll definitely be considering it

Generally, there are fewer major credits required at BA-programs, so take a look at the “Big List of MT Programs by Type” that has been pinned towards the top of the list of threads to see if there are any schools in the BA section that also have a business school. Then do your research. But do also think carefully about why you want to do both at once and if you can give either major enough attention when you are splitting your time. MT majors need to spend a lot of time outside of the classroom so it would be very challenging even if it is possible. If you want to be in business within the industry, you may want to consider a Performing Arts Management major alongside the MT degree since it would be within the same college. If you go in the business direction, you may want/need to get an MBA down the road anyway.

@shaun0203 thanks! I honestly have been thinking really hard kinda early in the game, and I really appreciate your input

@raellis123 @NAtlantaStudio Thank You! I can’t even formulate how I never discovered this campus. All of yesterday I researched it, and now It is my #1!!! THANKS!!!

Check out Indiana. You can definitely get a minor there with MT BFA - and many of their students do that. Extra major would take extra time.

Muhlenberg College has an excellent musical theater BA program where you can also major in Business. It would be kind of like Double Major in theater/Business and minor in dance then take private voice lessons. Completely doable with great training. Skidmore is very well known for Business and Theater but MT is student run. American University has MT as a major and also has a great major called Business in Entertainment which is a nice combination of the two. Trinity College (CT) is another one where you can double major in MT and business. Typically, the BA programs are the ones where double majors are possible; the BFA programs are extremely difficult to do this unless you add another extra year of college… and debt!

By the way - all the schools I mentioned are non-audition schools but with excellent training and highly regarded.

I think American requires an audition.

Coastal Carolina offers several minors that might be of interest to you. You can make a minor work more easily if you go in with AP or dual credits to help satisfy the Core requirements and open up your schedule.

Within the Wall College of Business Administration, there are 4 minors options - actuarial science and risk management, business administration, marketing and resort tourism management
