Where can I find rankings of particular majors/programs

Firstly, I'm not a parent, so I probably shouldn't be posting here, but I think this is the kind of info parents know more about that students. That being said, I'm looking for a book or website that can show rankings based on particular majors or departments. I'm am fairly certain I want to biomedical engineering or bioengineering (not quite sure which yet) and I want to find out which schools are best in those two majors. I just want to see rankings to have a general guide. People have told me that certain schools are good, but I want to find as many schools as possible that are strong in that area before narrowing down my list. Thanks!

My counselor had a book called the Gourman Report, but apparently its outdated. Any others out there?

us news usually has a ranking of engineering programs if I remember correctly
[Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/engineering)

Rugg’s Recommendations lists schools that are well-regarded in certain majors, but they aren’t ranked relative to each other.

Thanks, but I want to find biomedical engineering in particular. I tried using there search feature, but it was weird. It only listed a few schools that had that major when I know for a fact that other schools do offer that major.

[NRC Rankings in Each of 41 Areas](http://www.stat.tamu.edu/~jnewton/nrc_rankings/nrc41.html)

I don’t know if it’s up to date though.

The US news link for biomed engineering -
[Undergraduate engineering specialties: Biomedical - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/spec-doct-biomedical)

Michael2010, The link you provided is based on surveys conducted in 1993 – 15 years ago – and considers ONLY PhD programs, not undergraduate.

ABET is the engineering accreditation group; I believe they certify by degree.

[url=http://www.abet.org/accrediteac.asp]ABET[/url]

and if you purchase the premium edition of US NEWS you can see the rankings for not just the top 10 biomed engineering programs but the NEXT dozen or so  If one of your goals is to identify schools that even offer biomed engineering programs, you might want to check the engineering forum; they also often post rankings for the various engineering specialties. And in addition to ABET, there are some college sites where you can search for schools by major, such as College Board and Princeton Review. Another site you could look at for school ideas is the Sloan Career Cornerstone site (a great resource for students interested in engineering, technology, science, medicine); it includes lists of accredited programs for the different majors it covers:

[Sloan Career Cornerstone Center: Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math & Healthcare](Career Cornerstone Center: Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine)

UC-dad’s list gives you 11 possibilities to check out. Does someone paid for access to USNWR and can give us a peek at the next dozen?

I’m not an engineer so I don’t know how these things work exactly, but apparently at some schools, including mine, you are certified when you graduate with your engineering degree.

I only know this because someone transferred here from Miami (OH), which doesn’t provide this… so all the Miami students have to do some sort of certification process in addition to earning their degree.

Like I said, I don’t know specifics, but I’d just suggest that in your research, you make sure you find a school that will certify you, since that’s a heck of a lot less trouble. :)

Good luck with the search, if you have any school-specific questions about Case Western feel free to ask by PM and I’ll do my best to answer.

Some schools that are not certified are ranked higher than the others that are certified. Anyway, couple points in regard to engineering. Any engineering program is very tough and engineering companies usually hire locally. I also heard that Case Wetern in particular is a killer in engineering, very tough. It is very good school specifically for pre-meds and engineering and is known for awesome Merit scholarship packages (fact, not just a rumor, D. got over $25,000/year but went to a different school).

I am not sure there will be much difference in the BME rankings this year compared to last year; here’s a longer list that was posted in the Engineering forum a year ago:

Thanks for the help! That definitely gave me a better idea of what schools offer biomedical engineering and which ones have the best programs. And thanks scansmom. My dad loves lists like that!
