Go to temple and then temple med
Is that a common thing? Does temple med give preference to temple undergrads? @ClarinetDad16
First, no one ever asks a doctor where they went to undergrad. And second, it certainly couldn’t hurt.
Of the 3 kids I’ve known since they were little who went to Temple Med, 2 went to Temple undergrad, the other went to LaSalle. The LaSalle kid commuted and worked as an EMT in our town throughout his undergrad. Can’t say I know if being at Temple helped the other two one way or the other. I do know that one of the kids preferred Jefferson for medical school but in the end it was too expensive.
I think @mom2coIIegekids has a son at medical school. Maybe she can chime in here.
I doubt that Temple med gives preference to Temple undergrads. Temple Med is PRIVATE, while Temple U is public.
Temple Med gets over 11,000 application, yet enrolled about 60 instate students.
Yes, I do have a son in med school. It doesn’t matter where you go to undergrad as long as the school isn’t some podunk school that no one has heard of. But, any of the top 200 national univs would certainly be fine.
no one should ever focus on or think that they’re going to go to one particular med school.
Go to the undergrad that you LIKE, where you’ll be a top student and SHINE, and will leave you with minimal/no debt.

Only 11 were Temple undergrads.
You academic credentials are impeccable. YOU SHOULD, without a doubt, apply to the Penn State accelerated BS/MD degree program (and others that you might identify). I also think you should apply to Temple. There are over 37K students enrolled at Temple and these students did not let the potential crime situation deter them. Columbia/Yale Universities are located in slums, yet over 30K students apply to these universities each year. If you want to study medicine, you should go for it!!
On a slightly separate note, if I were to apply to the Penn State bs/md program, how would I do that? I’ve already submitted my regular Penn State application, I’m in the process of doing my Schreyers essays, but I don’t see where I apply to this program? Am I missing something on the site or did I have to mark something on my original application to be considered an applicant? I chose Biomedical Engineering. I’ve seen the write up Penn State has on the program, and still don’t know where to apply.
@mom2coIIegekids - here is the 11:
http://www.temple.edu/healthadvising/healthscholars.html
And that is the program if he wants to ensure he will go to medical school right out of HS.
And here on this link are many PA colleges with special relationships with Temple Medical:
https://www.temple.edu/medicine/admissions/prospective_students/special_admissions.htm
Yikes! Does that mean that no one from Temple outside of the BS/MD program was accepted to Temple Med?

They represent 106 different undergraduate colleges and universities with at least 4 students matriculating from each of the following schools: Penn State University (17), University of Pittsburgh (14), Temple University (11), Rutgers University (10), University of Pennsylvania (8), Johns Hopkins (7), UCLA (6), Bucknell University (6), Haverford College (4), and 3 each from College of William and Mary, Duquesne University, George Washington University, Georgetown University, Lehigh University, Muhlenberg College, New York University, Northwestern University, UC Irvine, University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, University of Scranton, Ursinus College, Vassar College, West Chester University, Yale University.

LaSalle - This is in a worse area than Temple. If your parents are against Temple, LaSalle is out of the question.
Frankly, your Parent’s must be educated on the finances of college. Unless they have large savings or large real estate holdings, I would not anticipate they can be approved to co-sign for all kids in your family if everyone will be taking out $100k in loans. Please have them do some research now so that they are not surprised come time for your younger siblings.
With your stats, you should consider the smaller LACs like Ursinus. With URM status and the “fuzzy” merit/grants they give, you may be offered a nice financial package.
U of Penn – it is strictly financial aid. If the Net Price Calculator does not provide results that are financially realistic, then it is not worth the application. I do not think the name yields guaranteed jobs. I know far too many underemployed, middle-aged, Wharton grads in our Philly region.
@mom2collegekids - One of the Temple doctors I’ve known since childhood majored in History (or maybe Sociology?) undergrad at Temple, so she definitely was not in the BS/MD program. I know she’s been a doctor for more than 5 years now, but I can’t remember the exact year she graduated.
^^
If she’s been a practicing doctor for over 5 years, then she graduated from Temple about 15 year ago.
I don’t believe that Temple Med had a BS/MD program then. In a 2013 article, there’s an indication that the BS/MD program is rather new.
