Where can I get in (California)?

I'm extremely worried about what colleges that I will be able to get into. My GPA has been a 3.8 for the past two years (weighted). I have just received my 1st semester junior year grades. I have B's in my 3 AP classes, but I have a C+ in honors pre-calc. I also have a B in physics and an A in debate. I'm worried that because of the C, I won't be able to get into any decent schools in California.

My extracurriculars are track, DECA, and Mock Trial. I also have a job as a lifeguard and volunteer at the Open Heart Kitchen.

I got a 2020 on my SAT and a 700 on the SAT II for World History.

Should I take the SAT again? And what schools would I be able to get into with my current grades?

Thanks!

This is my opinion, but I think in California class rank is more important than overal GPA. What is your class rank? Also, can your family afford private school? The California public schools are in flux given the state’s economic problems, and I suspect the UC/CS systems we see today will be different in two years.

I’m not sure as to what my class rank this year is. I moved from a small school in New York where my class rank was 13/70. My class rank last year was 58/732. I wasn’t even aware that colleges looked at class rank. What would be considered a “good” class rank?

Top 10% coupled with good SAT scores will get you in to a lot of very good schools. Not Ivies, etc, but plenty good. Try to raise both a bit if you can, though, to improve your chances.

You will be fine for many many CA schools, Off the top of my head if you continue in this high gpa direction you will be competitive for most UCs. Cal Poly SLO acceptance varies according to major but depending upon you major choice you could be competitive there as well. As far as Privates go with only 1 C and high SATs you would be match/safe at most. Obviously Stanford and the Claremonts aren’t safe for anyone and USC has become more selective, but strictly looking at Stats you met the admissions criteria for oodles of CA schools.

Cal Lutheran, Loyola Marymount and University of Redlands come to mind in Southern CA. In Northern California: Santa Clara University, University of the Pacific, Saint Mary’s. All are great smaller schools where you can get a fabulous education.

Thanks for the imput and the wide variety of schools that you mentioned!

Hi Christine!

I think you should take the SAT again. You should also take the ACT, since some students (especially girls) do better on the ACT.

Better scores might get you some scholarship at various privates and will help with the UC’s and the best Cal States.

What is your GPA for the UC A-G couse list. http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/subject_reqs.html

Some colleges (like the UCs) look at GPA for certain courses, some schools will include everything in the your GPA (including PE, electives, religion classes). Some/many colleges use a weighted GPA. So, your GPA may look different to various colleges.

Does your new high school weight grades on the transcript?

Also, do you know how much your parents will pay each year for your education? That can also determine where you’ll go and/or what strategy to use when choosing schools to apply to.

Do you want to apply to any schools that will give you merit scholarships? Schools like USF and Saint Mary’s give merit scholarships.

Thank you so much! You’ve given me a lot to think about. All the courses at my school are UC approved courses so my GPA should be the above. And yes, my high school does weigh AP classes and Honor’s Pre-Calc for UC’s.

I’m concerned about the upcoming semester in Pre-Calc. Can you get some tutoring to make sure you are understanding the material?

Yes, I’m definitely concerned about Pre-Calc. Right now, my dad is helping me and I’m going in for extra help from my teacher.
